People still play the original StarCraft, a real-time strategy game that first came out in 1998.
Now, the intergalactic war game is getting a major face-lift, the game's developer, Blizzard, announced Sunday.
"StarCraft: Remastered" will preserve the gameplay of the original 1998 title, but the new title will update its aging graphics and audio and will ensure better compatibility with modern computers, the company said.
"Gameplay and balance have been precisely preserved," Blizzard said in a statement.
Preserving the gameplay is important for this remake because the original StarCraft is still played as an e-sport, especially in South Korea.

A terrific opportunity to pick up what's acclaimed to be one of the greatest games ever.
(I'm sorely tempted to tag this post with "South Korea"...)
Bkmk
It’s an interesting development. Starcraft II was supposed to be the successor to the original, but it never took off in places like Korea where Starcraft is a big eSport. Sounds like they are just saying ‘F it, just update the original’.
This is becoming a really big trend in the gaming industry; game remastering/remixing.
I’ve always had issue with gaming companies just shelving old products from previous generations. As if people kept their 8 bit systems forever and future generations would never be interested in Super Mario Brothers and the original Zelda.
It’s as if MGM decided that the film version of Gone With the Wind should only be shown in wide release big screen theatrical release or not at all. Who would have seen that movie since 1940?
I don’t equate them updating sound/graphic files for the game at all with what film purists have criticized Lucas, Spielberg and colorization firms for.
If the graphics cards were available in 1998 that are available today, they would have done it.
GG
They should re-do Sid Meir’s Civilization too — the early ones were the best but they won’t run on a modern OS.
Now can someone update Freedom Force?
I think Alpha Centauri with Alien Crossfire was his Magnum Opus.
Terraforming for the win.
My goodness..the Hero of the Imperium posts here?
So it’s not a aluminum boat?
Make your time, boys
Lol
And sadly, Mr. Garriott sold over his legacy to EA, destroyer of all things good.
It would be nice to see updated versions of the classic Ultima and Wing Commander games.
Final Fantasy VII is supposed to be coming sometime in the near future.
For later consumption - loved this game back in the day
Most of these posts actually are made by my faithful aide Jurgen. But somehow I end up with all the credit. Poor guy. We really must find something to help him with his psoriasis...

The Emperor protects.
Hey now, they did a good job with Battle For Middle Earth 2 at least. And that is coming from a guy who doesn’t like RTS games. (anyone else find it annoying that the computer could manage its base, units and construction simultaneously? lol)
Otherwise, they should just stick with sports - because I don’t play those XD
I fully expect StarCraft, Doom, Super Mario Bros. 3, The Legend of Zelda, Fallout 3, BioShock and Halo will be played by our grandchildren.
