The scene from “Raiders of the Lost Ark” comes to mind.

Harrison Ford was surrounded. The guy steps out wielding a huge knife; twirling it around like a pro.

Harrison sighs, grimaces and promptly pulls out his gun, shoots him dead and moves on.

Yup. Now that is how it should be handled.

Yeah, but that twirling knife guy was an idiot.

If you intend to kill someone with your blade, you don’t start doing kata at 30 ft...

The most dangerous knife you can wield is the knife your opponent never even saw.

When I was in high school I went for a week to the Missouri Highway Patrol Academy as part of a cadet patrol program sponsored by the American Legion.

In the self-defense/use of force training the instructor taught us how Troopers defend themselves against an attacker with a knife if they were unarmed. “And if the Trooper is armed and attacked by a guy with a knife; have any of you seen Raiders of the Lost Ark?” Also, "Never shoot to wound, center mass until the threat no longer exist."

That scene was supposed to be a swordfight but Ford was sick. If you look at him in the shot he looks terrible. That scene was easier on him
