What is it with all this "turtle" stuff? Know your reptiles.

The alligator snapping turtle (Macrochelys temminckii ) is a species of turtle in the family Chelydridae. M. temminckii is one of the heaviest freshwater turtles in the world. The alligator snapping turtle is given its common name because of its immensely powerful jaws and long, spring-like neck. The inside of the turtle's mouth is camouflaged, and it possesses a vermiform (i.e., "worm-shaped") appendage on the tip of its tongue used to lure fish, a form of Peckhamian mimicry. The turtle hunts by lying motionless in the water with its mouth wide open. The vermiform tongue imitates the movements of a worm, luring prey to the turtle's mouth. The mouth is then closed with tremendous speed and force, completing the ambush.

The reason is that to make a motion to reconsider, you have to be on the prevailing side.

Motion fails.

Final vote: 55-45

McCain, that pillar of courage was one of the last Aye votes.

McConnell voted NO! WTF, over? Then asks for roll call. Procedural BS...

If McConnell voted no on cloture ... he must be pushing for the nuclear option.

yes, it failed initially 56-44. McConnell changed his vote to “no” so he could make a motion to reconsider so the official tally is 55-45. The reconsideration vote is now taking place.

That or something else.

I don't have a problem with it. The so-called filibuster of 60 vote rule is institutional dysfunction, and should be squashed. It's a minority veto, not good.

McConnell just asked that the failed cloture vote 55/45, be reconsidered, and asked for yeas and nays. So, the vote going on now is whether or not to undertake a repeat of the last vote.

55 Yes
45 No

Needed 60 for cloture. 5 short.

Nuclear Option to follow directly.

I think the process is that this a vote to revote. Once the vote to revote passes, then they change the rule from 60 to 51, then do the revote.

You do know the reason this appointment was even able to be made was because they refused to take up Obama’s appointment so the seat remained open allowing President Trump to make the appointment, right? On this he has stood firm...credit where credit is due.

Nuclear Option to follow directly.

I thought this had to pass to go to that step... can't they now filibuster since this vote failed?

Ah, so that’s why he voted no. Insider stuff, thanks.

I’m still appalled whenever I hear these roll calls, how many US Senators names I don’t recognized and have never even heard of before.

McConnell is going through all of the procedural steps one by one, so "directly" will take a bit of time and a few more votes.

Voting no gave him the right to make the motion to reconsider.
