New Yorkers shocked to find that people are fleeing their city in droves

New York, New York. So nice they say it twice. But it’s apparently not nice enough anymore for people to want to stick around. The NY Post highlights some recent population figures which indicate that a growing number of Gotham residents (that would be rapidly growing) either don’t want to live there anymore or simply can’t afford to. In either case, there’s a bit of an exodus going on and the Big Apple is losing residents faster than any other major metropolitan area in the country.

More people are leaving the New York region than any other major metropolitan area in the country.

More than 1 million people moved out of the New York area to other parts of the country since 2010, a rate of 4.4 percent — the highest negative net migration rate among the nation’s large population centers, US Census records show.

The number of people leaving the region — which includes parts of New Jersey, Connecticut, the lower Hudson Valley and Long Island — in one year swelled from 187,034 in 2015 to 223,423 in 2016, while the number of international immigrants settling in the tristate area dwindled from 181,551 to 160,324 over the same period, records show.

More than a million people in six years is not normal ebb and flow. To be fair, we should emphasize the fact that this isn’t just New York City… it includes the outlying areas of New Jersey and the inner reach of Long Island. It also doesn’t include the rest of New York State. (You know… the unfashionable, more rural upstate region where I live.)

Part of it is certainly the cost of living and that’s what the Post article focuses on primarily. When the economy improves, rent and mortgage costs skyrocket faster in that town than almost anywhere else and it’s already one of the most expensive places in the country to live. According to Fortune Magazine last December, the average price of an apartment in the Big Apple is now over two million dollars. Yes, you read that correctly… that’s for an apartment. By contrast, a bit more than five hours away to the northwest, a three bedroom colonial with a fenced in yard a couple of blocks down the hill from me sold for $85K this winter. If you could plunk that property down in the middle of Manhattan it would probably cost at least $25M.

But that’s not the only factor. Another cost of continuing to elect Democrats for generations is that New York State is one of the most heavily taxed states in the nation and the city is even worse. Progressive policies have led to some of the most invasive regulations and childish rules imaginable. (Though that’s something the true, diehard liberal progressives shouldn’t be complaining about.) All in all, if you want to live in New York City you’d better like a lot of government in your life and be prepared to fund it out of your paycheck every week at a steep clip.

In any event, you can add all of those factors up and it’s no wonder that people are fleeing. At this point we can only hope that the trend continues until the upstate population outnumbers them and we can get the state government back under control. Well… we can dream, anyway.

New York State has shed 18 seats in the HOR since my days as a young lad.

That's right, from 41 to 23 now.

The exodus has been going on for decades.

NYC is dying. The banks are moving out. Heck, even Highlands Ranch, Colorado, is the home to Visa debit card processing. Charlotte, North Carolina, has more banks moving in than NYC.

“...That is the purpose of “sanctuary cities”... prevent high cost liberal bastions from becoming ghost towns...”

You nailed this. The liberal dems are desparate to keep the immigrants coming in to keep their voter base at all costs so will welcome migrant refugee murderers, drug dealers, gang members and thugs - further driving out the stable workers from the cities who are leaving due to the high taxes.

My daughter and son-in-law; both well into starting successful law careers in NYC and now thinking of starting their family are now looking to get out for this exact reason. These are the type of up and coming professionals and also the stable blue collar workers who are needed by the city to sustain its enormous tax requirements to keep the migrants in handouts of food and shelter, etc. This worker base that is now looking to leave in droves as well as the pensioners taking their pensions to Florida. - The city needs this demographic to stay in order to remain viable.

Unsustainable!!! and ridiculously short sighted of DeBlasio, Cuomo, et al. to care only about power to the point that they are perfectly willing to kill the proverbial “goose that lays their golden egg” and explains why the sanctuary city is so necessary for the dems to stay in power.

Also the liberal cities have a low replacement birth rate (I am currently reading “The Big Sort”) due to the abortion rate and high numbers of gays and feminists who are not having children.

All of this is a recipe for disaster for a once beautiful state and city. Liberals poison everything they touch.

Sorry for the rant and the long post. I was born and raised in the southern tier of NYS - now live in the capital region and am sad to see our beautiful state being ruined.

Like I said, we shall see. Four years ago, you would have said the same thing about Detroit, Philly and Cleveland. But they are all in "red states" now.

If we are going to turn additional states red, we cannot have that "you deal with it" attitude.

By the way, your state of Alabama is very dependent on federal aid. Alabama is the 9th most dependent state in the nation with 36.5% of your state's revenues coming from the federal government.

New York? They are 27th in the nation with 32.8% of their state's revenues coming from the federal government.

But I don't begrudge your state having a larger share of federal aid than even NY.

How much of the outflow represents native born white Americans, mostly descendants of the immigrants from the 1840-1920 period, and the higher birth rate coming from the post-1965, mostly non-European, immigrants or their children? For the most part, the historic population of NYC has been replaced.

RE: Just not seeing it. I commute to NYC nearly every day and I have never seen it so crowded. Skyscrapers going up by the score. Brooklyn and Queens continues to have explosive growth.

___________________________

The immigration effect. As Native New Yorkers leave, they are replaced by immigrants ( legal and illegal ).

Parts of Queens ( e.g. Flushing ) is practically like Hongkong, Taiwan or Korea.

Expect NYC to be less white as time goes on.

RE: You elected deblasio, you deal with him.

De Blasio was elected mostly DUE TO VOTER APATHY. Only 22% of New Yorkers went to the ballot booth on that fateful election day and 70% of the vote went to De Blasio.

That’s correct! Very pitiful turnout. But that’s no excuse for the end result.

Grand Central Terminal is a model of efficiency compared to Penn.

Part of the reason for that is the fact that Grand Central is a terminal, not a station. Penn has trains coming in and going out from and to other places, both north and south. That is the reason for the Godzilla-movie scenes at every track announcement--they can't let you know till the last minute where your train will be because of delays etc. on the other trains. I don't envy the person with that job.

At Grand Central the empty trains just sit there calmly waiting for you to get on. The rush from five to six p.m. is fun to watch but it is nothing like the track announcement havoc at Penn.

Good point. I do the Penn Station routine every now and then when I travel to Long Island. At evening rush, I just grab a beer and go with the flow.

The number employed in NYC jobs is at an all time high. The Feb. 2017 number is 4.394 million.

Many of the descendants of white immigration to NYC between 1880 and 1965 have moved.

Today, many of the whites in NYC are Yuppies who moved to NYC from other parts of the region and country. They work for a number of years, get married and then leave to raise a family. That's a pattern that's been going on for years, although more so now. So while many of those people are leaving, there is a growing number that move in and replace the ones that move. Manhattan and the northern part of Brooklyn are newly gentrified filled with Yuppies.

The highest birth rates in the city are in Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods. I'm not sure what the birthrates are in the immigrant neighborhoods.

The only good thing about Penn Station is the Nathan’s hot dog stand.
