he United Arab Emirates arranged a secret meeting in January between Blackwater founder Erik Prince and a Russian close to President Vladimir Putin as part of an apparent effort to establish a back-channel line of communication between Moscow and President-elect Donald Trump, according to U.S., European and Arab officials.
The meeting took place around Jan. 11 — nine days before Trump’s inauguration — in the Seychelles islands in the Indian Ocean, officials said. Though the full agenda remains unclear, the UAE agreed to broker the meeting in part to explore whether Russia could be persuaded to curtail its relationship with Iran, including in Syria, a Trump administration objective that would likely require major concessions to Moscow on U.S. sanctions.
Though Prince had no formal role with the Trump campaign or transition team, he presented himself as an unofficial envoy for Trump to high-ranking Emiratis involved in setting up his meeting with the Putin confidant, according to the officials, who did not identify the Russian.

“We are not aware of any meetings and Erik Prince had no role in the transition,” said Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary.
“Erik had no role on the transition team. This is a complete fabrication,” said a spokesman for Prince in a statement. “The meeting had nothing to do with President Trump. Why is the so-called under-resourced intelligence community messing around with surveillance of American citizens when they should be hunting terrorists?”

If it was AFTER his election, it is a nothing-burger. Even if true. There’s no doubt Zero was being as non-helpful as possible on the transition, & initiating a conversation through other means might have been useful in laying groundwork for the new Admin.
Wow, I did not know the DeVos relationship. A few years ago, I was at the NCAA wrestling championships in STL and had the pleasure of being seated next to a retired SEAL that then worked for Blackwater. He had been a college wrestler from Oklahoma and I suspect he was a pretty hard barked man.
Good news, if true, the admin is learning step-by-step source of leaks, more good news . . . negotiations have begun with Russia. Its all good!
Whether or not this is true, Trump was already the President elect, and way beyond the campaign. He wasn’t purely a private citizen at that point. He had contact with other overseas officials as well at that point. I would expect any President elect to begin to deal with foreign officials during the transition phase of his presidency.
This seems inconsistent with the Dem talking points. If he was in cahoots with Putin from the outset then why did he need someone else to establish a backchannel relationship with Putin in January?

Meanwhile, right after Obama was elected he did exactly the same thing , with surrogates. This is common, normal and unremarkable. It’s called diplomacy. If we’re looking for ways to weaken Iran, bravo.
