Acclaimed Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko, whose work focused on war atrocities and denounced anti-Semitism and tyrannical dictators, has died. He was 84...

Yevtushenko gained notoriety in the former Soviet Union while in his 20s, with poetry denouncing Josef Stalin. He gained international acclaim as a young revolutionary with "Babi Yar," the unflinching 1961 poem that told of the slaughter of nearly 34,000 Jews by the Nazis and denounced the anti-Semitism that had spread throughout the Soviet Union...

Until "Babi Yar" was published, the history of the massacre was shrouded in the fog of the Cold War...

Nabokov translated his own Russian work into English as well.

After reading about a few for sale on Amazon, I’m wondering if I may have read the censored version, I got from the library around 1984. I didn’t remember all the topics mentioned in the reviews.

I also read about 4 or 5 other books about Nazi camps - Anus Mundi, Sobibor, Treblinka, and one called Dora, and maybe another. One after another. It’s one think to know “Yeah, the Nazis tortured and murdered millions of Jews, Roma and others” and completely different thing to read eyewitness accounts and researched facts.

As horrible as it was to read all those books, I’m glad I did. Added another whole dimension to my world view. My over riding thought after finishing the books was:

It WILL happen again, there is no way it won’t, because people are no better now than they were then. If anything, people are more immoral and vicious.

I read the reviews too... maybe in a few months. Thanks for sharing your feelings...
