WASHINGTON Against the backdrop of crumbling negotiations over the GOP bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, President Donald Trump said last week he wanted to oust incumbent U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford in 2018.
The South Carolina Republican told The Post and Courier that Trump chose to convey this message through an intermediary: White House budget chief Mick Mulvaney, a former member of the S.C. congressional delegation, co-founder of the House Freedom Caucus and a friend.
"'The president asked me to look you square in the eyes and to say that he hoped that you voted no on this bill so he could run (a primary challenger) against you in 2018,'" Sanford said Mulvaney told him.
He added that Mulvaney made it clear he did not want to deliver the message but did so at Trump's insistence.
"Ive never had anyone, over my time in politics, put it to me as directly as that," Sanford said, perhaps understating just how monumental it is for a sitting president to openly go after members of his own party.

What you mean is that Trump can do the same thing and it is A-OK with you.
Trump might be doing all this to be in good terms with the House Republican leadership, to have then nothing happen at election time, maybe even endorsing the Freedom Caucus in primaries. It seems like a very reckless approach though.
Lemmee see here... It looks like those people who were against Trump throughout the primaries, yes, and who were never-Trump throughout the general, yes, and who said, “Well, OK, he’s president and I’ll accept it for now, but, mind you, I’VE GOT ‘IM ON A SHORT LEASH!” are out there, yanking on that leash they think Trump is on.
But I like what Trump is doing. And I like the fact that hilary isn’t in office with her stinking pile of political maggots (thanks, Mr. President!).
Nattering nabobs aside, he is, and will be, President for quite a while. And no, he’s not on anybody’s short leash. Thank God.
“Sanford also has not shied away from expressing concerns about Trump’s... suggestions of mass voter fraud.”
Yeah, he needs to go.
Looks like Sanford was never a supporter.
“The man was in love, maybe for the first time”
It is called “having the hots.”
I will never have any sympathy for the Conservative Caucus. The Conservative Caucus installed Ryan as speaker. Let them deal with it.
Sanford is safe as long as he takes the hint and backs tax cuts and stays out of the South American jungle.
Slime r slime r slime
Be well.
He dumped his wife and children for a woman from South America and has done some weird things. His sons refused to speak to him at the time, don’t know if they have by now made up or not. He is a hard worker but not what I would call a stable person.
Primary Ratface Ryan, and remember you were elected to flush the Beltway turds, not to swim with them.
Or have a one term presidency like “Read my lips” Bush.
Sanford has plenty of baggage.
Maybe Marky needs to go back to his hike on the Appalachian trail
This is a stunning development. Mark Sanford is a solid conservative. Trump is waging war against patriots.
This is not going to end well.....for trump
Sanford is my representative. He is a drama queen and should be replaced.
Do youmhave anthing else better to do with your time than to,sit here all,day and make endless posts critical of Trump? Why dont you take a few days off? It might do you some good.
I’ve been very supportive of Trump sine 2015.
I will not be a mindless cheerleader when he’s wrong.
Quit attacking conservatives, dammit.
Since when is adultery a conservative value?
I am done with voting for these types of Bungholes.
