WASHINGTON Against the backdrop of crumbling negotiations over the GOP bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, President Donald Trump said last week he wanted to oust incumbent U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford in 2018.
The South Carolina Republican told The Post and Courier that Trump chose to convey this message through an intermediary: White House budget chief Mick Mulvaney, a former member of the S.C. congressional delegation, co-founder of the House Freedom Caucus and a friend.
"'The president asked me to look you square in the eyes and to say that he hoped that you voted no on this bill so he could run (a primary challenger) against you in 2018,'" Sanford said Mulvaney told him.
He added that Mulvaney made it clear he did not want to deliver the message but did so at Trump's insistence.
"Ive never had anyone, over my time in politics, put it to me as directly as that," Sanford said, perhaps understating just how monumental it is for a sitting president to openly go after members of his own party.

He might as well be.
Glad he is a solid member of the Freedom caucus. I don't think Trump can hurt him anymore than he once hurt himself.
Um, apparently not.
Maybe, but he is a solid vote. He’s got nothin to lose.
The man was in love, maybe for the first time. Even after being married with 4 sons. Democrats do crap like that all the time but Sanford followed his heart and had to deal with the collateral damage which was considerable. Make it right? Nope. People in the upper classes can carry out their whims.
What kind of party supports an Immoral Hack like Mark Sanford?
It may be then that Trump early on was legitimately inclined to replace Sanford with a bona fide R.
But using an action by Sanford that most of us would applaud as justification would seem contrary what appears at the sidewalk level as a bona fide agenda of the FC.
Mark Sanford ? Supporter? Perhaps you did not know the legendary wilderness journey of Mark Sanford.
Mark Sanford may be a nut, but if Trump wants to primary Dave Brat, he will make political opponents out of previous supporters.
President Trump did the same thing with Marla Maples.
Sanford is a creepy cheating POS. Who cares what happens to him.
No one seems to remember how much fun we had back when then-Governor Mark Sanford told his wife he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail, when in fact he was off banging his “soul mate” and AWOL long enough they sent the cops out to look for him.
Then there was having to resign as Gov. under threat of impeachment if he didn’t..
Funny how being a member of the falling-apart Freedom Caucus seems to trump all of that...because — “he’s a principled Conservative”.
“The president asked me to look you square in the eyes and to say that he hoped that you voted no on this bill so he could run (a primary challenger) against you in 2018”
Sanford didn’t vote against RyanCare, so this doesn’t matter.
If you mean having an affair - was Trump also in a position of public trust? You know better than to try to equate these two.
The previous poster said immoral.
Immoral is immoral.
Then there was having to resign as Gov. under threat of impeachment if he didnt..
Sanford didn’t resign. He finished his term as Governor.
Geez, here come the smears.
Anyway Sanford did the right thing on RINOcare.
I heard Brat just say that he was threatened with a challenger.
President Trump is making a BIGLY RINO mistake here.
