On Newsmax TVs The Steve Malzberg Show, Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) said he will confront the issue of cities that refuse to comply with immigration law by signing legislation that could jail sheriffs of sanctuary cities.
Abbott said, We have been pushing a piece of legislation in Texas that is going to pass that I will be signing into law that imposes even sterner penalties on counties. It will include things such as further defunding them. It will impose fines. And it could impose jail time for these sheriffs to enforce the laws. Oddly enough these sheriffs could wind up behind the very bars they are releasing these criminals from.

Lets start with Hernandez of Austin.
All he has to do is fire them and replace them.
The man in the wheelchair stands taller than the rest. His spine may be broken, but at least he has one.
I prefer your solution.
I don’t think he can fire them. They are elected.
I would like to see him go higher. He does have a spine!
Sheriffs are elected. The Governor has no authority to fire them.

It would be a laugh to watch Sally Hernandez waddling down the street, chased by Texas Rangers, as they arrest her.
Guess he hasn’t heard.
In the 21st century, it is Sheriffs who enforce the laws who get in trouble.
“Could Put Sheriffs of Sanctuary Cities in Jail”
Yep, he could but will he?
Make an example of her and maybe some other people would get more compliant.
The adults are in charge again.
I disagree...they broke the law. They’re supposed to uphold the law. They should get double time in jail because of that fact IMO!
Criminals can be prosecuted.
Exactly what we need. These supposed enforcers of the law are not allowed to pick and choose which laws they care to enforce.
This is an example of actually doing something. Note to “conservatives” in congress.
I think the most effective law that could be passed by congress is any family of a victim of illegal aliens can sue the city if they failed to cooperate with the federal government
Go get ‘em, Tex! I’ve met Governor Greg Abbott and he’s one of the nicest people on the planet. He’ll take good care of Texas.
Gov. Abbott plans to do that but he needs new legislation for that authority since county sheriffs are elected officials.
