The MSM blows up local stories all the time into the national spotlight when they suit their agenda.
I remember last year a clerk in a podunk town in WV sent an e-mail that was disparaging to Michelle Obama, and it hit the INTERNATIONAL NEWS.

Fair enough, but any trivial matter - an act of common vandalism or graffiti, an obnoxious tweet by a small-town city clerk, an argument in a line at a supermarket, an allegedly racist comment written on a restaurant bill - will become national news if it can be used in the media's anti-Trump or anti-conservative narrative.
