Diamonds aren't a girl's best friend...

A jewelry restorer has gone undercover at some of New York's most recognizable diamond stores to 'prove' that customers are being ripped off.

Diamond expert Jacob Worth, founder of I Want What It's Worth, claims that luxury retailers Tiffany & Co, Cartier, Van Cleef and Harry Winston all use 'identical' diamonds to those found in basic retailers - but with huge markups.

'There really is nothing special about these diamonds. Identical rings can be found at Costco or websites like Blue Nile,' he said.

'At Tiffany you are basically paying a massive markup up for a blue box which you can buy on eBay for 25 dollars.'

There are some things you do not do for practical purposes. It’s emotional and whether you like it or not, women like diamonds and what they represent. The value is really beside the point.

You’re not just paying for the gemstones, you’re paying for the setting too. If you want something unique in that regard it will cost a lot more.

Not me.

I have one in my engagement ring and that’s ALL I want.

I don’t want anything I have to worry about wearing and losing or getting stolen.

I like jade.

But I have a soft spot for emeralds and star sapphires.

Diamonds work very well as accent stones.

Can the wife tell the difference between a diamond and a CZ unless you tell her?

The customer is also paying for the brand name and the exclusive prestige it represents. Some people are into that and willing to pay the price.

Simple common sense should tell anyone that diamonds are not as rare as the jewelry marketers claim. There are plenty of diamonds for sale in every mall, department stores, stores like Costco, and on TV outlets like HSN. Think of all the places in the U.S., alone, where you can buy diamonds in most countries on earth, and it’s easy to come to the realization that the cost of diamonds is indeed ridiculous. It’s all about marketing and De Beers, which operated as a worldwide monopoly until very recently.

My wife likes rubies. I've told here on many occasions that I will buy her all the rubies she likes, but if she wants a diamond, she can buy it herself because I will not support De Beers' world-wide monopoly.
