Shortened title.

Full title: WhatsApp accused of giving terrorists 'a secret place to hide' as it refuses to hand over London attacker's messages

Amber Rudd has vowed to “call time” on internet firms who give terrorists “a place to hide” as it emerged security services are powerless to access Westminster attacker Adrian Ajao’s final WhatsApp message.

The Home Secretary said it was “completely unacceptable” that Whats App – which is owned by Facebook – was enabling terrorists to communicate “in secret”, knowing the police and security services will not be able to read their encrypted communications.

She has summoned WhatsApp, Facebook, Google and a host of other online firms to showdown talks at the Home Office on Thursday, where she says she will “call time” on extremists “using social media as their platform”.

"Ajao, 52, sent a final message via WhatsApp – which enables users to send text messages and pictures over the internet – just three minutes before he began Wednesday’s slaughter."

Facebook, Google and other sites have a history of failing to block terrorist handbooks, including directions on how to use a car as a weapon and a guide on where to stab someone who is wearing a stab-proof vest.

Yet God forbid one post something “too unPC” on FB. Then THEY will pull it themselves.

Talking about actually attacking non-Moslem whites? Naah, no problem! We’ll help!

I thought NSA had a built-in back door to WhatsApp.

So what’s the real story?

WhatsApp is correct.
If the Brits want the info, they need to get a search warrant from the appropriate authorities.
Anything else might set a precedent that undermines personal privacy and civil rights.
After the search warrant is obtained, though, if WhatsApp does not give up the info or destroys it, they all need to go to jail.

I suspect the NSA has cracked AES256 but it probably takes time.
What they want is to strong-arm them into putting in a back door to make it easier.

When the police state comes, it will be wrapped in the flag of civilian safety.

Doesn’t Facebook have a history of deleting killers’ profile pages after they have died in their attacks?

Or are those hoax pages?

I seem to recall a number of profiles that were captured/examined before the ban hammer came.

Do they share that information with the authorities or is their “friends’ list” (and friends’ comments on their page) considered private even after they have committed terrorist acts (and are deceased)?

I got trapped on Facebook a few years ago. I went on there
to post a message for Sarah Palin (among thousands of
others). So, it must have been in 2008. Immediately,
several people latched on to me as a “friend” (but not all
that many either), and there was no escape hatch then - at
least not that I could find. I was stuck until they did
finally put an escape hatch and I escaped. (I am old, so
I was hesitant to decline “friends” requests and started
getting requests from people I had never known. I was
afraid I’d refuse an old schoolmate in error.)

My cousin, a radio personality, had literally THOUSANDS
of “friends”; but he is one of the more really private
people I’ve ever known & I suspect that most of them were
fans he didn’t really know.

Bad news for WhatsApp, the NSA/CIA/MI5/MI6 probably already has the info they want. Their just trying to make it look legal by asking for it.
