Check out this quote from FBI Director James Comey’s testimony to Congress today:

Problem is that now that he has said that the FBI is investigating the Trump campaign, firing him would give Trump’s enemies ammunition to try and get rid of him.

The 10-year term is intended to limit the time he can serve in that role, and that's it. Bill Clinton fired FBI director William Sessions back in 1993 without any problem at all.
I can only assume that Trump has some valid reason, as yet not clear to us, of keeping Comey in there for now.

Director Comey doesn’t think so, but I will be quite happy to be proven incorrect in my (mistaken) assumption.
