It’s absurd to describe US-Russian consultations as an “alliance” — good for Trump admin. to engage in sensible military coordination with Russia, but this is far from an “alliance”..... and we should not for a moment imagine that Russia is abandoning support for Iran. They will get what they can from working with the USA but they aren’t going to drop military sales to Iran or ignore their interests when served by working with Iran.
Crimea is fine. But remember that every Tsar since Peter the Great has wanted control of Constantinople the Bodphorus and the Dardanelles. Russians have long memories.
The things that we really really don’t want Iran to do ( like having nuclear weapons with range to Tel Aviv, Berlin and Moscow)
Russia really really doesnt want Iran to do, either
Selling them weapons is one thing
Even protecting the mad mullahs so no one can take them out unless it is at a time and place of Russia’s choosing, if necessary
But making Iran capable of becoming an independent strategic nuclear rogue state?
Not in any major power interest
People who thought the EU would waltz into the Crimea without Russia objecting have to have had their heads in the sand. Five little words: Black Sea Fleet at Sevastapol.
Good thing to see Russia and us starting to work together. We are natural allies
The USN and the Russian navy, even during the Cold War, had a working relationship, especially on ocean navigation procedures.
I sailed in that environment, and saw it work!
Agreed, we will see what Rex Tilerson does after he is finished putting out a few fires. I expect he will spend several weeks in Russia.
Obama is deep Soviet state which is still around Russia. Seeing division between Us and Russia is of utmost importance for Soviets stoking Nationalist xenophobia in Russia. Lenin probably hated Russia more than he hated the US, jailing Esquimos who would make good money with America over the Bearing Straight.
“People who thought the EU would waltz into the Crimea without Russia objecting have to have had their heads in the sand. Five little words: Black Sea Fleet at Sevastapol.”
Exactly right.
Splendid analysis, MaxistheBest! Ping!
Cutting Iran’s wings is a tremendous advantage that comes from America and Russia working together to keep the peace.
That's true, and Crimea has deep historical and cultural value to Russia...something the euro-socialists cannot fathom.
Iran is a global terrorist threat. Having served first in the 82d Abn Div during the Iraninan Revolution and Embassy takeover, Lebannon Hostage situation, Regean's Iran containment, and even into 2011 with State, I saw both operational intel and an actual Iranian survey team in a S.American country where I was serving (we beefed up with two additional Sp Ops det's on embassy grounds but the TAKES VERY SERIOUSLY Iran's threat's to hit all US Embassies/Consulates, American Business interests and Citizens - given their pre-planning.
Obama appeased because 1) he is a Muslim stooge and 2) he was not going to deal with Iran but rather allowed them to monitor US diplomatic, military and civilian infrastructure abroad.
Trump is going to take on and end threats to American Security NOW.
The USA and Russia form a pincers around China. Very necessary.
Bullshit article. Written by someone who doesn’t know history. The Syrian/Aleppo affair was NOT the most serious face-off between the US and the Soviet Union/Russia since the Cuban missile crisis.
There was one very dangerous face-off during the Oct. 1973 “Yom Kippur War” between Israel and Egypt/Syria, etc.
The Israeli army under Gen. Sharon had cut off the Egyptian (9th?) Army at the Suez Canal and was beginning to hammer it into oblivion. Russia had 3 airborne divisions on ready alert, who would fly over Yugoslavia (or use it is a springboard despite what Tito might have wanted), to save the Egyptians.
The U.S. had the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea to deter the Soviets but it was partially led by a weak commander/ possibly then an admiral named Eugene LaRocque who felt that aircraft carriers “were offensive weapons” and didn’t want to take on the Reds. He later became the surrender monkey of the leftist-anti-defense “Center for Defense Information” which had ties to Soviet peace fronts.
Kissinger, being the coward that he was, tried to stop US aircraft replacement flights to Israel as well as forcing the Israelis to stop their offensive against the trapped Egyptian Division (on threat of Soviet invasion).
The rest is history. Israel, which would have had a complete victory over Sadat’s forces, was forced to pull back and let the Egyptian Division retreat unscathed.
I talked to LaRoque and found him to be a pleasant fool, but a high ranking one until he retired (some sources says he was forced to retire because of his weakness in dealing with the Soviets).
Another friend of mine was on one of those carriers and they were on a war-fighting status.
Nixon, however, listened to Mr. Betray the South Vietnamese Kissinger and partially caved in to the reds.
Much of this is still classified so what I have written above comes from personal stories told to me or unclassified news stories, etc.
Being an accredited journalist helped in getting reliable sources that the average person would never have access to, so I hope that I have filled in a few blanks about history as well as to point out that the National Post writer Lawrence Solomon doesn’t know his history.
VERY interesting. Had not thought about that. Thanks!
