Guy wearing Trump hat sues bar for refusing to serve him
NY POST ^ | March 19, 2017 | By Dean Balsamini

Bartenders at a West Village hot spot served up discrimination — with a liberal twist — refusing to serve a customer because he was wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat, according to a lawsuit.

Greg Piatek, 30, an accountant from Philadelphia, claims he was snubbed and eventually 86’d by workers at The Happiest Hour on West 10th Street over his conservative fashion statement, popularized by Donald Trump on the campaign trail, he told The Post.

“Anyone who supports Trump — or believes what you believe — is not welcome here! And you need to leave right now because we won’t serve you!” Piatek claims he was told as he was shown the door by a manager.

The shake-up started when Piatek and two pals, after a visit to the 9/11 Memorial, ordered drinks at the posh tavern around 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 28.

A female bartender served Piatek a $15 jalapeño margarita and his pals beers. But when he tried to order a second round, a male bartender noticed his hat — and skipped them, he said.

One of Piatek’s pals pointed out it was their turn to be served, but the bartender scoffed. “Is that hat a joke?” the Manhattan Supreme Court suit claims.

Let’s end discriminatory anti-discrimination laws. If a shop keeper cannot refuse service to blacks or gays, why should he be allowed to refuse service to the half of the population that voted for Trump?

I've agreed with that for years. End all anti-discrimination laws and protected classes, allow businesses to exclude anyone that they want to, but require that they clearly identify who they will not serve and then let the market sort it out.

You MAKE the case. Making “new law” is what lawyers live for.

They can and he can sue. Don’t know if he will win but he just made their lives miserable.

Yep, but the negative press can’t help the bar even though it is NYC. Plenty of Conservative vacationers will think twice about dropping their money there.

Unfortunately in New York City it's probably attracting business rather than discouraging it. When I go to New York City I accept that I'm in the belly of the beast and don't expect anything but liberals.

To hell with that! If it’s bake the cake or shut down its serve the drink or shut down. If you can’t refuse one customer because they offend you the same is true here. Payback...all the way to the SCOTUS!

I was thinking -just open the border, vetting as much as possible and then provide incentives for English speaking teachers, doctors, etc to also come. That would hurt Mexico to the point of collapse.

Just suggesting this with a picture of a new America flag would cause them to build that wall to keep everyone from leaving.

Probably not that miserable. It would be thrown out pretty quickly.

You MAKE the case. Making “new law” is what lawyers live for.

They also live for fat legal fees, which they would get in this case regardless of whether the client wins his case or not.

He’ll probably lose because he’s not in a “protected class,” but I would hope he’d appeal all the way to the SCOTUS to overturn the entire anti-American concept of “protected classes,” in which some people have more rights than others.

Well now, that is just HOSTILE.

Everybody knows that a suit of that magnitude would surely bankrupt the establishment.

Which may be the intent.

I would not have paid. When they make an issue of it, you point out their refusal.

Maybe maybe not. Either way it’s going to cost that bar in legal fees and now bad press. Nothing like bad press to kill a business. Every trump supporter in the country knows who they are. Would have been better just to serve them.

Same for the plaintiff.

Nothing like bad press to kill a business. Every trump supporter in the country knows who they are. Would have been better just to serve them.

Sounded like this was a rare Republican customer. I doubt they would take much of a hit from a business standpoint. In fact liberals would probably make a shrine out of it.

The gay wedding cake case was based on an Oregon state law.

No it wasn't, it was Lakewood Colorado.......do your homework.

“Tell that to Sweet Cakes by Melissa. If they can’t refuse then neither can these people.”

The two cases are not at all similarly situated.

Different laws, different states.

Moreover, the case in New York is a bar and bars can refuse people for dress code.

Most importantly, a bar employee can throw anyone out who they perceive to be intoxicated.

End of story.

Greenwich Village went for Hillary 15 to 1. Condos are selling here for $2-3 thousand per sq.ft.And if you ever see a black person here, she’s pushing a baby carrage with a white baby in it.

But if you have a “Make America Great Again” sticker on your car, don’t park it here.

I’m surprised they didn’t have signs up saying “Don’t come in if you support Trump.” They do have signs around town like that.

The place could be flooded with trump supporters if they felt like it, just make the bartenders life a living hell. Then again probably some dive that’s not worth it.

“...a private business has a right to refuse service for any reason ...”
********
Let’s not take private property rights to rediculous extremes. For example, the big leftist-managed food chains should not have a private property right to starve Trump supporters into submission by refusing to serve them. What that shop keeper did is one more step in that direction.
