Welfare reform has been a high priority for Republicans and conservatives for many years, and now that President Donald Trump is in the White House, the possibility of such reform is finally feasible.
In what was quite possibly the opening salvo on welfare leeches, Trump was ready to sign a bill passed by Congress that would allow states to perform drug tests on those applying for unemployment benefits, WITI reported.
Under President Barack Obama, states werent allowed to test applicants for drugs unless they were applying for a job that already had mandatory drug testing. However, theres a new sheriff in town and hes backed by a Republican-controlled Congress that, while far from perfect, is at least more likely to pass common-sense legislation like this than any legislative body under the control of people like former House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

At last!
In before the “...but I’ve been paying into that my entire life” folks.
I think the federal government should stick to their appointed duties , this is a states issue, and besides , the government has no business searching without reasonable cause , regardless of the noble cause and good intentions......the federal government is outa control
Actions have consequences. Hope that Trump can pull this off without some drugged out liberal judge stopping it.

I agree about Fed staying out of a lot of things...Interesting comment (#5) here about Pot being legal now...
Like Judge Judy says
Byrd & I have been paying you for years, now we are paying for your drugs.
How about random drug testing for government workers?
“...this is a states issue, and besides , the government has no business searching without reasonable cause , regardless of the noble cause and good intentions......the federal government is outa control”
The fact that most companies now require drug testing is reasonable cause to assure that they are ready and able to go to work.
Just saying Donald,
You need to focus on bringing back jobs to America first.
That is FIRST. Jobs. Then you can focus on making sure people are not abusing things like this.
But focus on American jobs first. Now.
The fact that I agree with your last point does not negate my belief that getting fired or laid off is not an invitation to a drug-addled vacation. As long as my taxes are going toward paying unemployment that is good cause to do drug testing.
In fact, add drug testing for welfare and section 8 assistance while we are at it.
In before the marijuana is “safe” because it is “natural” and has “no” side effects crowd.
You take benefits from gov, you become essentially an “employee”, and as such there should be SOME standards
Just asking for mandatory drug testing of firemen or cops will get you into trouble.
Retired people on social security should be tested too? Who pays the cost of the testing? The employer. That’s a lot of dough.
I’m waiting to celebrate until after he signs the bill, and it passes the gauntlet of lawsuits and activist judges and those who will ignore the law.
“That is FIRST. Jobs. Then you can focus on making sure people are not abusing things like this.

This kind of action doesn’t take any time or effort. Especially because Congress already passed the same thing. Why would you not want Trump to do anything and everything he can during one of his 20 hour days??
BTW, if he waited for the jobs to come around in full before he did anything else you would be pretty disappointed I would guess!!
I mean really..unlike Obama(and pretty much every other President I have seen) the man can walk and chew gum at the same time!!
“In fact, add drug testing for welfare and section 8 assistance while we are at it.”
I think you are right...The drug problem is demand and nothing will stop a person from doing drugs faster than a random drug test coming up positive and cutting off your monthlies.
Tough love, but it will save lives and save everybody money.
Random testing for government bureaucrats (not military) and mandatory monthly drug testing for elected government officials to include House and Senate.
Tough love....the noun is love. The Narcan approach (we forgive and save EVERYONE, no individual responsibilities for them) seems to have made the horrific drug overdose problem worse. I just hope lawyers don't get involved and make it impossible to make the necessary changes.
