Secretary of Defense James Mattis has asserted that climate change is real, and a threat to American interests abroad and the Pentagons assets everywhere, a position that appears at odds with the views of the president who appointed him and many in the administration in which he serves.
In unpublished written testimony provided to the Senate Armed Services Committee after his confirmation hearing in January, Mattis said it was incumbent on the U.S. military to consider how changes like open-water routes in the thawing Arctic and drought in global trouble spots can pose challenges for troops and defense planners. He also stressed this is a real-time issue, not some distant what-if.
Climate change is impacting stability in areas of the world where our troops are operating today, Mattis said in written answers to questions posed after the public hearing by Democratic members of the committee. It is appropriate for the Combatant Commands to incorporate drivers of instability that impact the security environment in their areas into their planning.

Maybe he really is "mad"?
IT'S JUST "NATURE" AND NOTHING WEIRD NOR UNUSUAL...LIKE WINTER IS COLD AND SUMMER IS HOT IN THE USA!
This and Trump PUSHING Ryancare I am starting to become very disappointed and disillusioned!!!!
ME TOO!
“The climate is quite possibly changing, and the arctic will probably melt...”
Or not:

He’s Petraeus all over again. I’ve had enough of these Obama Generals Trump has appointed to his admin. Flynn, Mattis and McMaster all have had red flags to varying degrees already.
Oops. Now we find out Mad Dog means something other than courage in warfare.
Looking more and more like climbing careerist and less like a “Mad Dog” who has no time for PC nonsense.
The climate constantly changes, aka climate change. This is not necessarily AGW—human caused change. Of course military planners need to take climate into consideration when making plans. Unless the SecDef claims AGW is a serious problem and wants to spend money fixing it, who cares? Plus, let’s talk reality for a moment. Any general officer who served during the last 8 years was obliged to carry out the president’s orders concerning AGW. You could probably expand that time frame to include the Bush administration.
You're denying natural climate change? Past natural warm and cold periods?
Really?
LOL.
Indeed, it did so, cyclically, several times. Major portions of what is now Wisconsin (my native land) were covered with massive ice sheets repeatedly, except for the southwestern quarter (approximately), the renowned and charmingly rugged, topographically speaking, Driftless Area. See it in autumn, especially, when the maples and oaks display their ample foliage in reds and yellows and browns.
I’m homesick!!!
I first became suspicious of this guy when I learned of his position on Israel. I bet he is all for homosexualizing the military too. Trump should have kept him as a general in the military with orders to just shut up and fight. He can keep his non warfare oriented opinions to himself.
“Its the same kind of egocentrism that had men believing that the sun must revolve around the earth.”
Very much so.
Libs think we can destroy the world with nuclear weapons.
Now, even more farcically, with carbon di-oxide.
It is hubris.
Weather is weather and has been in flux, since there was life on this planet.
In the Northern Hemisphere, most places have seasons ( at least 2 and I don't mean "wet" and "dry", like in India ) and in the Southern Hemisphere, they are reversed. Of course there have been changes and interruptions of the norm; many due to volcanic eruptions. But THAT isn't what is meant by "CLIMATE CHANGE" in this day and age....sadly.
There was no Ice Age! LOL
Perhaps that's one of the reasons why Mattis thinks that human activity is NOT a primary contributor to the global warming that we see.
My brother is a retired federal military service worker, some sort of secret squirrel.
Mattis’s credibility became suspect to me when he described Mattis as “a real warrior”.
Bro’ thought Obama and Hillary are real aces too.
I hope President Trump is keeping these guys on a short leash.
Mattis is in a position where his views and exhortations are outside of his specialty. If he tries to incorporate them into the military I expect he will be stifled or fired.
The worst was his pushing of former ambassador Patterson to be his undersecretary. She’s pure evil, supporter of Muslim Brotherhood. And he wanted her. She “served” under Kerry.
This job should have gone to General Keane.
Sadly, General Keene’s wife passed away just as the General was on the list to be considered for the position of SecDef, and the General withdrew his name.
I’ve never forgotten the video of him during his speech saying he was withdrawing his name from consideration. When he did that, his face looked almost gray in color .. and it was weird, but I just burst out crying (I didn’t know about his wife’s death; instead, I thought he might be dying - but his expression was painful to watch).
Then, the following day I saw a report re the General’s wife dying, and I was crying all over again.
However, a few days later the General was on FOX, and the grayness was gone from his face. He didn’t smile, but the pain on his face seemed to have eased.
General Keane is the person I was hoping would be in charge at the Pentagon. I rarely disagreed with anything he talked about .. and that’s unusual for me .. because most military people are either too passive or too aggressive. General Keane seemed to be more balanced.
Each time General Keane appeared on FOX, he began to look more and more like himself. It made me wonder if President Trump was calling him also, just like Trump did for the owner of the Patriots (when he was dealing with a family death). And, I have continued to feel that way because General Keane seems to be smiling now more often; as well as having more and more normal coloring in his face.
I still think he would have been a better choice to head the Pentagon.
You don't even know what song I'm referring to, nor who sang it. *snicker*
