Yes. It may be that my sense of humor was more tuned to sarcasm when I was brash and young, and am more mellow now. But I don't think my judgement would have been TOO far off - back then I despised liberal twits like Alan Alda or (the albeit very pro-life) Martin Sheen.

Letterman - or those who influenced / wrote for his show back in the 80s - had a lot of silliness in their hearts - witness things like the velcro trampoline stunt, or the Alka-Seltzer-in-a-tub-of-water bit. Or maybe they were just recycling / channelling a lot of Steve Allen bits.

I think the real David Letterman was killed about 1992 or so and replaced by Rob Reiner in disguise. Note recent photos of the now retired "David Letterman" in public:
