In yet another instance of purported hate crime, a 64-year-old man in Florida attempted to set fire to a store owned by an Indian-American thinking they were Muslims, news outlet CNN reported. The accused, Richard Lloyd reportedly told the deputies that he wanted to “run the Arabs out of our country.” St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara told CNN that Lloyd assumed the owners were Arab and what they were doing in the middle-east angered him. “It’s unfortunate that Mr. Lloyd made the assumption that the store owners were Arabic when, in fact, they are of Indian descent,” Mascara is quoted as saying by CNN.
Lloyd pushed a dumpster in front of the store and set it on fire. However, the store remained unharmed as the fire was put out immediately. No injuries were reported.
Mascara also said that the man’s mental health will be evaluated and it will be then ascertained whether the case merits hate crime charges. Lloyd had reportedly visited the store a few days earlier and asked for orange juice; however it was not available. According to CNN, Lloyd told deputies he “was doing his part for America” and that is why he tried to burn the departmental store.
Earlier in February, an Indian techie Srinivas Kuchibhotla was shot dead after an American man thought he was from Iran. In March, a Sikh was shot at while being told “go back to your own country”. The man, however, survived.

Excellent suggestion. But Indians in the U.S. can be Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, Muslims, atheists, etc. How shall each mark themselves — armbands of different colors perhaps?

Most of the Indians in this country are Hindus. They do not look like Arabs at all and their wives dress in a way that cannot be mistaken for Arab women. The Hindus have a sensual culture.

Noticed that at the large Korean supermarket with also has large Indian and middle eastern sections. Used to be that I felt sympathy for them and was tempted to tell them they don’t have to endure that in America. Now it’s anger that they display that fearful submission.

A certain portion of Hindu immigrants are, in fact, Moslem. They usually, but not always, have Arabic or Urdu names.
Non Moslem Hindus should differentiate themselves. Hindu is not actually a religion. It just refers to people from the subcontinent. The Thomas Christians and Moslems that didn’t run to Pakistan are Hindus. The Religion we call Hinduism is really a congeries of many local and some quite different paganisms. Some groups of people , ehen they are in a different area worship the local gods when they are there. Others believe their gods require exclusive worship. Most little religions are live and let live. Some will kill non adherents that enter their territory. Most react violently to Moslem attacks and can give a pretty bloodyy tit for a perceived Moslem tat which is why the country with the highest population of Moslems isn’t taken over by them.
