Colorado Rockies right-hander Chad Bettis is taking a break from baseball to undergo chemotherapy after discovering that his testicular cancer has spread.
The Rockies said Bettis, who had a testicle removed Nov. 29, would undergo cancer treatment over the next several weeks in Arizona. There is no timetable for his return.
Bettis said his oncologist found inflamed lymph nodes during a routine checkup last week and a biopsy showed that my testicular cancer has unexpectedly spread, and I will begin a regimen of chemotherapy in the very near future.

This is terrible - first I’ve heard of it. He came into camp cancer-free and rarin’ to go. He’s a good guy and emerged as a stand-out pitcher last season. Get well soon, Chad.

Whenever *any* kind of caner spreads (metastasizes) it’s very, very bad news for the patient.

Gee Thanks for the positive input Twenty years of working for a hospital with a close affiliation with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (google it) taught me more than I wanted to know about cancer.
I hope you're not thinking that I want this guy to die!

I know Farber and Cancer well for reasons I will spare you. My point was most of us already know what you posted with out 20 plus years in the business

I have a friend in Rockies management. I’ll tell my friend to search the apartment of the Bettis for stuff found in Bonds’ apartment.
Steroids cause testicular cancer in young people. Just ask Lance Armstrong.

It floors me that they would remove a testicle for Cancer and then NOT do Chemo & radiation. I recently had a cancer removed from my breast and they put me through Chemo (5 more sessions). After that is done, I get 10-12 weeks of Radiation (I believe that is the figure), it is 5 days a week. That move may have spared him. I hope they are able to arrest it at this point. I certainly wish him well.

As a Dermatologist this is not normally my area of expertise, but my recollection is that testicular cancer, in addition to being common in young men, was one of the first big success stories in chemotherapy. A residency mate who married another residency mate came down with it during training and has done well for nearly 30 years now. Most of the subtypes are good prognosis ones. I'd expect the stats from
The Testicular Cancer Society to be accurate 5 year survival numbers: disease localized to testes 99%, metastasized to just lymph nodes 96%, distant metastases 71%. Not many cancers do nearly as well with distant mets. Article reads like just lymph node spread found so he should do well. I don't know what the chemo would be, but he might be working back into shape before the season is over. To pitch as well as he has in Denver he's got to be tough!
