"... Nineteen sixty-five was the year everything began to change. First, there was Vietnam. Opposition to the war tended to divide the country along class lines, with the college-educated elite avoiding service and the fighting and dying left to the average man..."

Utter moron. My class in Navy Aviation Candidate School in 1968 was just one of hundreds that passed through the Pensacola Grinder to later earn our wings and fly in Vietnam. You had to be a college grad just to apply. But like other brain dead Liberals, Peters hasn't as clue.

I remember when the New York Times wasn’t perceived as a liberal propaganda sheet.

Well, actually, I don’t.

That was also before Democrats systematically destroyed the coal industry and tried to convinced those hard-working people that being on the government teat was a fair substitute, and that they and generations before them had been raping Mother Erf.

Like the NYT would know anything about Appalachia...

I was born and raised with the Smoky Mtn Nat’l Park bordering our farm...

I served in Vietnam and I am a very proud “HillWilliam”...
That’s a “Hillbilly” with a college education for those NYT people who don’t know “mountainese”...

Yeah. Having a political party that say you suck, you are destroying the environment, and you life and livelihood is going to be legislated out of existence (with zero input from you) can tend you turn you against that party.

One can just hear the liberals: “But...they don’t understand. Coal is evil, it destroys the environment, it will kill them and their children! We are doing this for their own good!”

And you know the most disturbing part of that? There are untold numbers of liberals who will read that last paragraph and yell in outrage “It’s all true!”

They don’t understand that the most vicious and destructive tyrannies that are perpetrated are ostensibly in power for the “good of the people” being tyrannized.

“Rush Limbaugh, Fox News and Donald Trump have been too successful in encouraging ugly feelings like the senseless hatred of Barack Obama.”

This idiot STILL doesn’t get it and blames others for what is going on.

Has he checked out DU lately, college campuses,or Black Lives Matter?

Now THAT’S hate !!!!!!

I think he was talking about those who were drafted. The sons of the upper class and political elite were exempted through college deferments. The sons of coal miners and farmers and factory workers were drafted.

And the old liberal Democrats didn’t push homosexuality and other bizarre behaviors. Old Democrats such as Truman or JFK were strongly anti communist. Old liberals such as Humphrey and Moynihan decried increasing out of wedlock births and single mother poor households.

There’s a works of difference between the liberal radical Democrats today, and the liberal Democrats of yesteryear.

It is difficult to predict the future, I think WV will be red for some time.

The progressive/communist party has been demonizing those in flyover country since Obama started in 2011, they have no credibility.

Obama, Hillary, and many other Leftists sought to destroy one of the mainstay’s of family life in Appalachia, the coal mines.

Now this Leftard is lamenting the loss of Appalachian support?

Good grief these folks are thick!

Clinton: http://www.weeklystandard.com/sittin-on-the-eve-of-the-bay/article/2006550

Obama Administration’s Impact: http://money.cnn.com/2015/08/03/investing/coal-obama-climate-change/

Obama’s and the Left’s war on Coal: https://www.gop.com/even-house-democrats-vote-to-stop-obamas-war-on-coal/

[ in this last entry (from 2012), it was readily apparent that Obama and Congress engaged a war on coal ]

[ they tried to play recent Trump and Congressional actions reviving coal as a betrayal of the Appalachian community - oddly, the Appalachian community went for Trump based on his promises to revive the industry ]

[ I do find some complaints about water in the region, but I have to wonder if those were Leftist activists, or were real citizens with real concerns ]

[ the vote sure didn’t uncover that reality ]

[ I do think the water needs to remain safe, and I believe that will be addressed if need be - Trump isn’t there to make life unsafe for our citizens ]

Hi, Tom! My first job as a kid was selling the NYTimes in NJ. I never sold one because in those days New Jerseyeans would scream at me that it was a communist rag! I lasted about two months.

In 2016 a majority of West Virginia’s voters supported Donald J. Trump, and many expressed outright hatred of Barack Obama. But when I was last active in the state’s politics, in 1960...

Dude, things changed over 56 years!
