The blizzard in Hawaii and high levels of precipitation in California contrast sharply with the low snow levels across much of the rest of the country in 2017.
It's been a strange year for weather so far, and a recent series of events has confounded expectations.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, a blizzard hit mountaintops on Hawaii's Big Island. Most of the snow fell overnight, blanketing the summit of Mauna Kea with eight inches and making the road to the summit impassable. In California, meanwhile, record levels of rain and snow look set to lift much of the state out of drought come spring. Across much of the rest of the country, however, the expected winter precipitation never materialized.
It's not the weather events in themselves that are surprising, weather forecasters say -- it's the intensity of storms, rainfall, and even dry weather.
Despite Hawaii's reputation as a tropical paradise, the peaks, which are nearly 14,000 feet high, do get snow in the winter months. Mauna Kea, the highest point in the state, has a sub-Arctic climate, the weather service told USA Today. But this week's snow, which prompted a blizzard warning on Tuesday and Wednesday, was unusually strong, intensified by the fact that the weather system lingered over the state.

Damn you, Donald Trump!
42 feet of snow on Mammoth Mountain in the southern Sierra of California and more on the way.

I’ve been on Mona Loa.
its the strangest thing tramping through snow up there, and then 45 minutes later being in a hot, humid tropical thunderstorm in Hilo, which feels like you’re in Vietnam or Thailand.
The Christian Science Monitor is a big promoter (although less hysterical than many others like Science, Nature) of the global warming aka “climate disruption” scam. It has been a purveyor of fake science, pushing for years the stupid “permanent drought in California caused by climate change” narrative.
It tries now, unconvincingly, to avoid eating crow with the pathetic excuse of drought is climate change but flooding is just weather.
Preach it brother! I live in a remaining "severe" drought area and have been appalled at watching millions of gallons of water run off into the Pacific this winter. The Greens -- and they include most of our public officials -- fight common sense with suicidal/homicidal passion.
It’s amazing. These weather people seem to think the weather should remain stable and unchanged. Yet the weather on this planet has always been in a constant state of change.
Very odd.
That dastardly Wo Fat is behind it.
There is skiing in Hawaii, Mauna Kea, it’s just that there is no resort / lifts as there isn’t enough takers or necessarily snow every year. I have read of ski clubs in Hawaii that take advantage of what Hawaii snow they have and go Mainland for the sure thing in California..Colorado....

The Big Island has 10 of the 15 types of climatic zones in the world and is only the size of CT !
I went skiing in Hawaii, it was on my bucket list and I did when my friend got married there. He married a pure Hawaiian. They own a B&B on the Kona Coast..
