Some congressional Republicans were quick to agree Thursday with Democrats calling for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to recuse himself from investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election, following leaks and media reports that Sessions met with Moscows ambassador twice last year.
During a town hall with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on CNN Wednesday evening, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) said that if Sessions had spoken with the Russian ambassador, then for sure you need a special prosecutor.
Graham did later call demands for Sessions' resignation "crazy" in a series of Thursday tweets, but added "Sessions needs to explain his contacts with the Russian ambassador during his service as a Senator - thats appropriate."
"AG Sessions should clarify his testimony and recuse himself," House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) tweeted early on Thursday.
"I think, the trust of the American people, you recuse yourself in these situations," House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" Thursday morning.
McCarthy, in a later appearance on Fox News' "Fox & Friends" backtracked and said he wasn't calling on Sessions to recuse himself.
"I'm not calling on [Sessions] to recuse himself," McCarthy said. "It's amazing how people spin things so quickly."
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) joined in during an appearance on NPR on Thursday morning. "It is potentially the case that there is going to be Justice Department recommendations or referrals based on anything regarding the campaign, he said. "Depending on what more we learn about these meetings, it could very well be that the attorney general, in the interest of fairness and in his best interest, should potentially ask someone else to step in and play that role."
During a CNN town hall on Wednesday night, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Sessions couldn't be trusted to investigate..

GOP running from the battlefield again. Its what they do. Its who they are.
It's who we have to deal with these days.
The last person you want in a foxhole with you is a DC Republican
This did happen to Holder. It’s disgusting that Republicans never did anything to that truly corrupt Obama administration.
There is no need to be concerned. Trump will stand by Sessions, and that’s what matters. Secondly, average voters are sick of DC hystrionics, and this will ultimately hurt the Dem/RINO brand.
No need for handwringing. It will all work out just fine.
Well said...(reminds me of the “amnesty” fiasco the other day)
Sessions should appoint special prosecutors; for Fast and Furious, Benghazi, the IRS scandal, Hillary’s server, the Clinton foundation, and now the multi-billion political slush fund at DOJ. Maybe this will push Sessions to do so.
It will work out just like Gen Flynn......
Sessions just feed the sharks. YOU NEVER FEED THE SHARKS.
Do you really think the Leftist and Globalist are going to stop here. Haha! The Leftist and Globalist learn making B.S. up works! This will ENCOURAGE THEM TO DO MORE ATTACKS.
This is their game. They will continue, to attack, attack and attack until Sessions is gone.
Then the will move on to their next target.
A BIG MISTAKE was made today...
Must lower expectations. All this Trump winning has my optimism up. Must temper that; too many Demoncrats and RINOs in power, and too much Deep State intrigue to ever all Trump to Make America Great Again.
“No need for handwringing. It will all work out just fine.”
Wished I could agree. If the “investigation” falls to a Obama holdover now that Sessions has recused they could take Trump out or cripple him. Trump doesn’t seem to realize he is in a war for his life.
All the dumb smiles and 'don't recalls' at the presser are meaningless when what is really going on is handing power over to underlings you really do not know. How freakin' dumb are we.
chaffez and mccarthy. don’t forget Mr. President. continue to watch your back.
The Stupid Party... stepping and fetching for the democrats - AGAIN!
Annnnd the Democrats have one complete scalp (Flynn) and one partial scalp (Sessions). They detect blood in the water....who will they be able to tarnish/ruin next? Semantics are destroying the efforts of this new Admin. Why aren’t the Republicans standing up for their own??? And of course, now an Obama holdover will be in charge of the investigation. IIRC, the Obama Admin/minions have NEVER been able to find ANY wrongdoing by Obama, et al. THE SWAMP JUST GOT AN INFLUX OF GUPPIES TO KEEP THEMSELVES AFLOAT.
I’ve been out of pocket but last I heard, President Trump was standing 100% behind AG Sessions. That’s what counts.
Leave Thelma and Louise and the rest of the Republican twits to stew in their own juices. We’ll all remember them the next time they’re primaried.
And, AZ FReepers—you’ve got work to do. Some kind of intervention or something.
The Dims are eventually going to play this Russian thing to death and people will stop listening. They’re already starting to groan at the sound of the word ‘Russian’.
So add Graham, Chaffetz, McCartney and possible Rubio to names that are going to come for investigation by the Justice Department. :)
And they had better be CONSERVATIVE Special Prosecutors or NOTHING will be found!
All correct but what annoys the hell out of me is how the hell he could have been so god damn sloppy.
Everyone knows the Russia angle was a media liberal creation. Why the hell was this not foreseen.
Either he was economical with the truth during the vetting process which I find hard to believe and or the people around trump building his administration have seriously messed up. Heads should be rolling all over the place. Someone, maybe a few people are responsible for this stupid distraction.
Yes he technically is telling the truth, but in the current climate, the feeding of the sharks happened at the very moment he didn’t bring these meetings up before he was appointed. Stupid mistake, stupid distraction and another sign of some real morons that don’t have Trumps back.
