French centre-right presidential candidate Francois Fillon has said he will fight on, as he announced that a judge was placing him under formal investigation.
For weeks, he has fought allegations that his wife was paid for year for work she did not do.
"It's a political assassination," Mr. Fillon told reporters on Wednesday.
He has now been summoned to appear before the judge, Serge Tournaire, on 15 March.
The date is just two days before the deadline for candidates to submit their final applications. The first round takes place on 23 April, followed by a second-round run-off on 7 May......

They are also going after Marine Le Pen on similar 'fake jobs' charges with two key aides under investigation and Le Pen refusing to talk with the authorities until after the election.
The European Parliament has voted to remove Le Pen's immunity so she can be prosecuted as a 'hate criminal' for posting a terrorist attack photo on Twitter.
All this so the Corporatist-Globalist banker Emmanuel Macron can win the race.

This is good news for Le Pen, whose poll numbers have been under quite a bit of pressure.
Trump’s unpopularity in France is hurting Le Pen.
Let’s hope the centre right is frightened enough of the socialists that enough will now flee to Le Pen to stop the immigration madness.

I sat a month ago and watched a French history professor go over Macron. In the end, the only words you could use....was “empty suit”. He is the most unknown character in French history since WW II to run for President. If you asked people about his resume...they can cite two jobs...beyond that, he’s unknown.
If you were looking for experience for the job...he’s a virtual zero. That’s the amazing thing about this election. You could have three or four mayors from around France doing a better job politically and campaign-wise.
The comical side of the Macron story is his early history with his life. Go look that up. In the US....she would have put up for charges.
What did Fillon do that is so bad? I just hope the French will vote for a great future for the nation of France.
It’s horrible news for France if that left-wing slime Macron makes the runoff.
