The state's motto may be Excelsior but New York is definitely not living up to being ever upward.
In fact, a new in-depth analysis of the nations 50 states ranks New York going downward and just 17th overall behind the likes of Massachusetts (the best of all), North Dakota (fourth best) and even Iowa (sixth).
The inaugural Best States rankings by U.S. News & World Report crunches an unprecedented amount of data in seven categories: health care, education, infrastructure, crime and correction, opportunity, economy and government.

Odd, in my ranking they are 45, Just ahead a Mass., Conn, Mrylnd and Kalifornia.
Next up:
#1 tax haven/easy regs - CALIFORNIA...!!
(So/so weather, though..)
Choice of data points is everything.
I call BULLCRAP on this. Taxachusetts is #1?!? People and businesses must be FLOCKING to the Bay State, then. And NY as 17th?! Garbage. Fake News.
Obviously economic and personal freedom, gun rights, and low taxes weren’t weighted very heavily. NY, NJ, and MA are at the bottom of the heap when you look at these.
Not surprised to find that this is from US News and World Reports. Had to be a Leftist poll with Massachusetts in 1st place. Really enjoyed living in Boston a few decades ago, but from what I’ve heard, it isn’t nearly as safe as it used to be.....how sad. Leftists ruin everything they touch.
Do not forget MD the freak state with high taxes and unconstitutional gun laws. Really hate having to go there since they care so little about the safety of their citizens and visitors.
What a ridiculous ranking.
Can we say,”Fake News?”
To which I add an emphatic DITTO
The people in Mississippi are the happiest people on the list.
New York is NYC plus flyover NY.
the effetes probably voted based on the state with the most empire state buildings, broadway shows on broadway, etc...
LOL! The 17th BEST???!?
I fled that state in abject horror way back in 2000.
interesting where the no state income tax states fell.
This is really about big city dwelling.
I’m telling you, when I click on some of these stories, I am starting to hear a laugh track in my head. Lemme get this straight:
New Jersey, a state people are leaving in droves, is 14.
Texas, a state that people are migrating to in droves is 38.
The comedy just writes itself.
I must be confused.
None of my top 5 states made the top 10 in this list.
Only 1 made the top 20.
