Members of the Congressional Black Caucus and other Democrats this week re-introduced legislation that would set up a commission to consider whether reparations should be paid to black Americans for slavery.
Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., has proposed the bill in each Congress for at least the last two decades.
A description of the bill said the legislation would set up a commission to both examine the possibility of reparations, but also an apology for the "racial and economic discrimination against African-Americans."
It's a response to the "fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery in the United States."

Conyers' new bill wasn't released as of Wednesday, but the version of the bill proposed last year found that 4 million blacks were enslaved in the U.S. from 1619 to 1865. It said the commission would examine the entire history of slavery, and then make recommendations on whether the U.S. government should apologize for slavery, and whether reparation payments are warranted.
If the GOP was smart, we would sacrifice just enough safe district Republicans to sign on to this such that it becomes a big public issue, but not enough to pass it. Keeping something like this at the top of the news for any length of time would devastate the Democrats.

Man did I misread the title. I thought Democrats were demanding reparations for the slaves we took from them during the Civil War.
How many Black Americans are still living from the 1860’s slave era that need checks? How many White slave owners are there from the 1860’s that should be paying?
If the answer is none & none, then this is pure leftist commie Black racism cast upon Whites!
Actually, I think Blacks should be paying descendants of Union Soldiers that supposedly freed the slaves.
There is not one black American who would be alive today if it were not for slavery. If their lives matter, the owe a debt to slavery and slavers.
I made the mistake of telling a black guy that as well - slavery was, in retrospect - a favor to the blacks brought over.

I just finished reading a book about European history.
Lots and lots of slavery.
Lots of people getting chased out of one area and then forcing someone else out of their area.
I’m owed reparations by at least a dozen countries.
I’ll pay when they pay me.
But, wasn’t most of the slave owners democrats?

If this ends up being a thing, I want my family paid reparations for dying and losing their fortunes to give them the freedoms they enjoy now.
Including the freedom to speak out and demand such reparations.
I come from the land of Generals Grant, Sherman and Hayes to name just a few.
My family never owned any slaves - ever. On any side up as many generations as I can go. And that is beyond pre-cival war.
They were never paid for their blood nor toil to free the oppressed. They willingly gave their all and then some for freedom because they knew what it is like to be without.
Even on the south, very few had the money to own a single slave or even keep much food in the mouths of their children.
Almost everybody was poor in the south except for the wealthy plantation owners.
Those descendants genetically and politically are the Democrats. If they want to dig up history we don’t have to go as far back as 1860, 1960 will do.
I am so sick of the reparations people stomping on the graves of my ancestors demanding money for things paid for with the blood of my people without a single thought of respect for them.
Not to mention the affluent lifestyles American blacks live compared to their straw hut dwelling relatives in their native land.

Exactly. Thousands died to free the slaves. The war pitted brother against brother.
Back in Africa, people live on a few dollars a day.
Black Americans should spend time improving the lives of their African brethren than shaking down white folks for money.
Sitting around waiting for a White Sugar Daddy to make them whole won’t solve their problems.
The whole reparations thing is a scam.
