The freedom from the strict restrictions on calories, fat, sugar, salt and other elements, came at the expense of federal funding to help cover free- and reduced-priced lunches for some students, but district business manager Brett Lago said the decision is already paying off in year one.
Weve lost, to date, about $40,000 worth of reimbursement, but our sales are up about $50,000 over last year, he said. Participation has gone from about 25 percent to 45 percent, and were still providing free lunches to all those students who would have been eligible under the school lunch program.
Ditching the federal regulations allowed school food workers to redesign the cafeteria from a funnel system with few choices to a food court model with a deli and panini station, grill, main course counter and other stations, according to the news site.
You get to choose what you want instead of being sort of funneled in and only having one choice, junior Chase Zavarella said. I think everyone is happier with the new selection.
Senior Brianna Lander pointed to the cafeterias garbage cans as evidence that the new system is working better than the federal rules, which require all students to take a fruit or vegetable whether they wanted it or not.
The trash cans were always full, sometimes overflowing, Lander said. You dont see that now. People would go up to the snack line and get random junk food, where now you can get an actual meal and eat it.
Penn-Trafford High School is among more than 500 schools that have dropped out of the NSLP since strict nutrition regulations were imposed on schools through the Healthy Hunger Free Act championed by former first lady Michelle Obama.

It’ll take awhile to shed all of the communist sh## those 2 idiots hoisted on Americans.
I can only imagine members of the lunch bag inspection Gestapo wept...
I always used to laugh when, periodically, someone here would post the menu from Sidwell Friends where the Obama daughters attended school. It was fun to compare and contrast how that elite private school feeds the students, vs. What Michelle Obama was feeding the rest of our kids.
“The House Freedom Caucus has called on the Trump administration to consider efforts to repeal the lunch rules during the first 100 days, while the School Nutrition Association will request reasonable flexibility for menu planning, according to the Quad City Times.”
Just wondering why this “rule” has yet to be repealed. Trump needs to get writer’s cramp signing EO’s on stuff like this.
Perhaps I missed something, but by what authority could Michele Obama dictate school lunch policy in the first place?
@#Moocheele’s horrible lunches.
Now to regain local control of curriculum, books and methods, and regain personal liberties on school property. It’s starting...

Funny how a free market system works.
Michelle ‘championed’ the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act Of 2010. Fed law for state school lunches.
And she obviously didn’t follow her own edict.
Notice how Obama used the withholding of federal funds to change behavior. The Left and the MSM were fine with it. But Trump's pledge to withhold federal funds to sanctuary cities is met by a firestorm of protest.
As I understand it, the “Healthy Hunger Free Act” was passed by Congress, but Mrs. Obama was the arm twister, lobbyist, publicist, traveling promoter and chief nag of it all.
One size fits all never does................
That is my lasting wish.
The queen feasted while the commoners’ children starved on inedible glop. Good to be the queen.
Says it all.
Someone with enough power to scrub the internet has taken down almost all of Sidwell’s cafeteria pictures.
