According to the Kazakhstan Ministry of Defense the helicopter (carrying four rocket pods) was involved in a “planned visual orienteering exercise,” in which trainee pilots were told to determine their location “including by means of human survey.” According to the statement, cited by the local media, the exercise was a “success.”
In other words, the crew member was asking for directions to the closest city after getting lost in poor weather.

Just fly around the town water tower and read the name off of it. Then find that name on the map. That always worked for me.

After a short interrogation by one of our CI warrants it was determined the pilot was lost, and didn't want to call his unit for help. He claimed that we'd camouflaged so well that he knew there had to be a unit there. One of the warrants took a map up the hill to show the pilot where he was, and sent him on his way.
His comment about over camouflaging was brought up in our after mission report.
Easy to see why they got lost, like a white-out. They still should have GLONASS and GPS unless the rules said they could not use that.
My wife said that if I were piloting that craft, never would I stop to ask for directions. She’s probably right. I hate to ask for directions.

Me too! I had a jammer setup on a hilltop. Helicopter lands and the pilot walks over and asks me if “we” (me and my partner sitting in a jeep) were the Air TOC.

You buy a Samsung phone and use Google directions.
That way, you get an advanced smart phone with very superior GPS thrown in for free.
Last I checked, Garmin is getting into fitness devices. Good luck to them! Isn't capitalism great?
