The California Department of Water Resources issued a sudden evacuation order shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday for residents near the Oroville Dam in northern California, warning that the dam’s emergency spillway would fail in the next 60 minutes.

The Oroville Dam is the highest in the nation.

I have been following this thread... Based on the information I have garnered, wondering WHY the authorities have lifted the “mandatory evacuation”?

Comments: Rob S 8% filled in during good weather, heavy weather on the way. Did he just say 5" expected in Chico and 1.5 to 2 times that expected on the site? Up to 10" rain expected? Must work faster. I don't know all the math on that but it seems the lake is not being drained fast enough for what's coming. Still no word on how long that main spillway can run at this release rate. Maybe they should blast a hole in that wall and take the top off that lake. Crazy right? Better than the failure that looks likely to happen. 30 minutes ago•1

I’d be heading back to town with a trailer to pack up as many belongings as possible ... and be out of town by Thursday or Friday.

Thanks. It’s hard to know how to read what he said...at least to me. Not sure if he meant because of the evacuation order and ensuing chaos or that it’s going to be inundated. ..seemed casual..

Going to read what I missed while at work...I imagine the pressure on LE to lift evacuation order was intense.

Not as warm? I am not betting on that and I am in the middle of the track.

...Active Weather Pattern Returns Thursday...

A series of weak to moderate storms is expected to impact the
region beginning Thursday and potentially lasting through the
middle of next week. There is potential for strong winds across
the Sierra Front Range and along the Highway 395 and Interstate
580 corridor late Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
Additional rain and snow will create periods of difficult travel
conditions in the Sierra. Current projections don`t indicate any
strong storms. However, with very wet antecedent conditions in
lower elevations and exceptionally deep snowpack at higher
elevations, even small amounts of precipitation could create
renewed flooding concerns.

The main flooding concerns will continue to be along smaller
streams, areas of poor drainage, and main stem rivers in northeast
California such as the Pit, Susan and Middle Fork Feather, which
have already seen flooding this past week.

Our recommendations are to utilize the next two dry weather days
to clear snow, mud and debris from storm drains and poor drainage
areas, and to keep flood mitigation measures in place.

Thanks for posting great finds!

Thanks for the link. The story however does not seem to include any possible ecological reason they were messing with the relief valve.

Perhaps would it be too politically charged if that work was done for a non safety related purpose?

8%...

That is significant.

I’d do the run home, pack, weep, pray, and leave...

My understanding is that he was just coming into office as Governor and was able to serve as the State’s Governor during the dedication but the Dam and Lake had start many years before he was elected.

OK, at the spot where the main spillway water turns turbulent, I can see a slice of red dirt to the left.

That wasn’t there before; most of the erosion was to the right of that spot.

I think there may be another further down, but the turbulent water makes it hard to see right next to the spillway.

How far away horizontally from the spillway is the patch you mentioned?
