The California Department of Water Resources issued a sudden evacuation order shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday for residents near the Oroville Dam in northern California, warning that the dam’s emergency spillway would fail in the next 60 minutes.

The Oroville Dam is the highest in the nation.

Video of national guard member talking with woman from Oroville.

Not to downplay the danger, but the NG guy was talking about preparations for if the whole dam should collapse. That could send flood water 180 miles south.

My uneducated opinion, based almost solely on information learned in this thread, is that total dam collapse is unlikely but possible.

My father grew up in Oroville and went to high school in Gridley. I would hate to see the area wiped off the map.

On one hand great! On the other it means warm wet storm coming.

Be safe and dry.

From the replies to the vid, the NG guy is there in case they have to evac again.

Big storm due Monday.

I’m severely hearing impaired so can’t do audio too well; rely on transcripts/closed captioning...

Here’s my on-the-run (busy here today - no, I’m nowhere near California) transcript.

I’d appreciate someone double-checking it for me!

I left out the woman’s questions. These are all statements by the National Guarf (?) guy.

“We’re here to support the evacuation... re-evacuation.”

“... setting up supplies, evacuation centers...”

? “We’re already moving people to Merced (?) tomorrow...”

“I’d find a place to go west.”

? “Frozen water’s a lot safer.”

You’re probably right, but worst case is what they should be preparing for.

I hope they can contain that lake.

Praying.

I listened to the video and did not hear the same level of alarm that the woman who made the recording did.

It seems the woman was particularly alarmed about some of the troops considering a move to Merced. Perhaps the National Guard is considering moving some of their people for some other reason. For instance, Merced may be needed as a staging area if something drastic happens.

Merced is quite a ways south of Sacramento. I have seen nothing indicating even a failure of the entire dam would reach as far south as Merced. The water would flow into the Sacramento River, and from there into San Francisco Bay. Don’t see how that would get close to Merced even in a worst case.

None of us know the odds of a dam failure. All we know is that a particularly heavy rain coupled with warm temperatures means at least the emergency spillway portion of the dam is likely to fail. Who knows what would happen after that.

Since it COULD fail, if I lived in the potential flood zone I would make sure I was ready to leave at a moments notice (at a minimum). If my personal situation allowed it, I would leave NOW. Why worry about beating the rush once it becomes clear you must?

She was hearing his preparation plans as though they were imminent plans. They want to stage and be ready for a massive evacuation. That is why they’re there. The odds of actually having to evacuate probably depend on whom you might ask, but it’s not a given that it will happen.

If I lived there and had a good place to go for free, I’d bug out for a while. But really, my plan right now would be to prepare to bug out, have things in order so that I could move quickly if needed, but not to panic. Always be prepared.

I only transcribed what he said and passed it along.

If there is any kind of flooding from the dam, having people evacuate farther rather than closer would be good because road conditions will be awful nearer the flooded areas.

Hoping and praying for the best.

:-)

Not criticizing. I'm glad you posted it.

The woman who made the video is clearly VERY concerned, and I'll bet a LOT of other people are too. It was very useful insight into the way people in the potential flood zone feel. I don't blame them one bit either.

Another unspoken thing this woman's recording highlights is how little trust people people have in the government telling them the truth. The lack of trust is well earned.

Getting the plant on line again would be great. Obviously, they can move some water with it, but it also will produce the free byproduct of electricity for the portion of water that does flow through the turbines.
