Threatening secession is far from the only thing that the Golden State has in common with the Old South. Over 60 percent of California voters went for Hillary Clinton a margin of more than 4 million votes over Donald Trump.
Since Clintons defeat, the state seems to have become unhinged over Trumps unexpected election.
Calexit supporters brag that they will have enough signatures to qualify for a ballot measure calling for Californias secession from the United States. Some California officials have talked of the state not remitting its legally obligated tax dollars to the federal government. They talk of expanding its sanctuary cities into an entire sanctuary state that would nullify federal immigration law.
Californians also now talk about the value of the old Confederate idea of states rights. They whine that their state gives far too much revenue to Washington and gets too little back. Residents boast about how their cool culture has little in common with the rest of the U.S. Some Californians claim the state could easily go it alone, divorced from the United States. Sound a bit familiar?
In December 1860, South Carolina seceded from the Union in furor over the election of Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln did not receive 50 percent of the popular vote. He espoused values the state insisted did not reflect its own. In eerie irony, liberal California is now mirror-imaging the arguments of reactionary South Carolina and other Southern states that vowed to go it alone in 1860 and 1861.
Like California, South Carolina insisted it could nullify federal laws within its state borders. Like California, South Carolina promised to withhold federal revenues.
Like California, South Carolina and other Confederate states bragged that their unique economies did not need the Union.

Perhaps I should describe the Puget Sound region or I-5 corridor as the nexus of socialism.
Someone send Jerry Brown a confederate flag.
The lone similarity between California today and the Confederacy is secession. VDH’s knowledge of what drove secession in 1860 is pretty weak if he thinks it had anything in common with what is going on here now in Crazy America.
New England threatened secession twice. VDH might as well make that comparison while he’s at it.
Don’t be stupid. You don’t give up the best to settle for less. CA is the crown jewel of this great country with strategic massive harbors, one of the biggest military presences etc. So that’s not going to happen Reb.
With a new administration in place, one of the things I hope they investigate is to what extent there are connections between the Mexican government and the illegal community in California and California government processes.
The MSM/Left blew the email leaks that showed that the DNC screwed over Bernie and that Hillary cheated at the debates into a big “foreign government interfering in the US” narrative.
So what about the Mexican government? Are they interfering in the US?
Wikileaks needs to focus and obtain hacked data from CA state government. These sellout criminals have lots to hide.
Do it Julian!
What people don’t realize is that California’s history of progressive politics is nothing new.
This state used to be a hotbed of GOP progressives like Hiram Johnson who defeated Democrat George S Patton Sr for US Senate in 1916. Earl Warren, three term Governor and bane of American conservatives when he was Chief Justice of SCOTUS. GOP US Senator from Orange County during the 1950s and 60s, Thomas Kuchel, who was bitterly opposed to Barry Goldwater and an ally of Lyndon Johnson.
Ronald Reagan was the anomaly.
Geographically most of California is conservative. It’s the high population centers around LA and San Fran that pull the state to the left. Perhaps the state should be divided into two states, much like what happened in the Civil War when West Virginia separated from Virginia because of cultural and political differences. I should go back and read exactly how that process was initiated.
If CA turns the entire state into an ultra-liberal enclave, inviting unvetted millions from Mexico and around the world, the conservatives who are left, and believe it or not there are millions, are likely to leave the state. It will soon become another state of Mexico. The name Mexifornia will be fitting.
In fact, Trump should put out *big* cash rewards for people in CA to come forward with information leading to arrests and convictions of CA government officials.
Start it at $1,000,000
Boy talk about a dumb title
Cut off the power and water and secession ends in hours.
California was its own nation for a whole 25 days in 1846.
The Bear Flag with one star and a grizzly bear flew over the California Republic.
Freepers are probably ignorant of this
California is a positive tax contributor to the USA overall IN SPITE OF ITSELF
And it’s the worlds seventh largest GDP
but electorally it would help us no question
The only drag California is is unto itself and electorally
Btw
It’s not happening
The state splitting up maybe one day but never secession
That’s right. Secession is never going to happen. Pie in the sky BS. But it could split at some point, like the State of Jefferson. Unlikely, but possible.
And you’re correct, CA pays more in fed taxes than most all of these so called conservative, “red states”. Most here have no clue about CA.
I woulda never figured grants pass to cave junction and Bryan etc going 2-1 Donald
Huge pot growing areas
So much for conventional free Republic wisdom on that
Pot is probably the biggest industry in cave junction
Very twin peaksish
Beautiful country
Now eastern Oregon is about like Texas culturally
NorCal is similar demographics wise
The Inland Empire should secede like West Virginia did.
Then build a wall around the “rebels” and let them eat each other.
Let them secede, but destroy every dam, aqueduct, powerline, or any other form of infrastructure that was built by ‘mericans. Also completely block all water from the colorado river to the imperial valley. Also northern Nevada must sue for damages each and every day that our air quality is wrecked due to fires because of their krap forestry practices (sometimes you cant even see the sun for weeks at a time), and we need to charge carbon taxes for each estimated ton of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere because of said fires
