Read the letter Coretta Scott King wrote opposing Sessions’s 1986 federal nomination

Coretta Scott King, the widow of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., urged Congress in a letter to block the 1986 nomination of Jeff Sessions for federal judge, saying that allowing him to join the federal bench would “irreparably damage the work of my husband.” The letter, previously unavailable publicly, was obtained on Tuesday by The Washington Post.

(Read the full letter below)

“Anyone who has used the power of his office as United States Attorney to intimidate and chill the free exercise of the ballot by citizens should not be elevated to our courts,” King wrote in the cover page of her nine-page letter opposing Sessions’s nomination, which failed. “Mr. Sessions has used the awesome powers of his office in a shabby attempt to intimidate and frighten elderly black voters. For this reprehensible conduct, he should not be rewarded with a federal judgeship.”

Thirty years later, Sessions, now a senator, is again undergoing confirmation hearings as President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general, and he is facing fierce opposition from civil rights groups.

.....

BuzzFeed News first reported the existence of the letter earlier Tuesday, noting that it was never entered into the congressional record by then-Judiciary Committee Chair Strom Thurmond.

So, Mrs. King makes specific allegations regarding a specific investigation that Mr. Sessions headed, and characterizes it as a one-sided witch hunt.

OK. So then gentlemen/and women, start your search engines, and let's see what becomes of these allegations under scrutiny.

She twisted the situation then to hurt Sessions chances. Thankfully God saw fit to right her wrong doing now.

I suspect you are right. It sounded like voter fraud to me. But the proof is in the public record of this investigation. I got a busy day and must stop posting now, but ask the august members of our society to investigate further. The LSM will not.

I vaguely remember someone posted a letter in defense of Sessions this week from one of the people [or their son] who were prosecuted in the vote fraud case.
It pretty much nukes the Coretta claims.

Coretta may or may not have been misled on Sessions by the false claims of yet another individual, a black guy who testified against Sessions years ago who was certifiably insane [the guy sincerely believed that Dan Rather gave him instructions via invisible waves from the TV or some such thing?]

Frankly, the opinion of a woman who — with her children — got down on her knees to kiss the ass of the white supremacist murderer who killed her husband is of no interest to me.

Uh, I should be interested in her damn letter WHY? Sessions is now AG and it is irrelevant. Besides I supported him. She didn’t even know she was married to biggest tom cat in a clerical collar and I should research her letter? Adequate proof has been presented Sessions was not a bigot,

Thanks for that excellent link to the CR article where the real story of vote fraud in AL is told. And it’s not a bit surprising that it is a story of black-on-black crime where one faction of Democrats steals votes from another faction of Democrats. Coretta King’s letter merely supports the faction associated with the traditional civil rights movement insiders.

I reject the notion there are people in our society who are so pure and noble they're above contestation. The media acted in stunned disbelief at Trump's shocking "attack" on the living martyr John Lewis. Not a single one pointed out the president was defending himself against The Saint's outrageous slander saying Trump was not a legitimate president.

That aside, I can't recall ever having thought of MLK as anything other than a rabble rouser which makes me a pariah in a culture of unquestioning worship of the civil rights leader.

Excellent link, and the links to the original filings on that page are decisive in Sessions’ favor.

It should be of interest to someone whether there is any substance to her accusations, if only to refute those snowflakes who claim that there is, such as Fauxcahontas and whoever that annoying woman on The View who took Faux seriously. If it isn’t of interest to you, it may be of interest to others.

Oh how awful...MLK wanted to enjoy the rights guaranteed him by the Constitution. The South in the sixties was dominated.politically by some of the nastiest fascists the democrat party could find.

IF you lived through that time and were in the South (or anywhere else for that matter), justify for me the inhuman treatment of fellow humans.

No, I don't approve of the injustices committed by the Democrats in the South. That doesn't mean I have to side with King's approach. Not everything requires confrontation and provocation.

This is dynamite. Either Coretta was a party to the fraud, or mislead by the fraudsters. Either way, Sessions is exhonerated.

Peaceable assembly is guaranteed by the constitution. Southern dems used mobs, dogs, water cannon, beatings, bombings , and killings to try and intimidate people

Just how Wa K provocative ?

Not at all.

Given her poor judgement and clear public record on any number of issues unrelated to Sessions, it's manifest that it's Coretta Scott King who is the racist here, and the burden of proof falls on anyone quoting her to prove her assertions and not the other way around.

Pox on both their houses. King opted for revolution where evolution was called for given the existing tensions.
