Here in Southwest New Mexico, the local university, WNMU, is actively seeking Mexican students. The university is a “sanctuary university”, and worse, gives financial aid to illegals. The following is an article from just a few weeks ago about WNMU’s president, Joseph Shepard’s trip to Sinaloa. Mr Shepard has continually lobbied our county to increase taxes to pay for these programs. Also of note, WNMU has paid members of the original Weather Underground to come and speak at the university, making attendance at the lectures mandatory for many students to receive credits.

“Western New Mexico University officials met with the new Governor of the State of Sinaloa in Mexico this past week to formally sign an agreement between the two institutions.”

“The agreement, signed at the Governor’s Palace with the newly elected Governor Quirino Ordaz Coppel, opens up opportunities for student and faculty exchanges between the State of Sinaloa and WNMU.”

“Silver City has become a hub for Mexican students in recent years that are looking for summer and semester-long opportunities to learn the English language in a total immersion style environment. The Sinaloan government recognized the past successes of WNMU to attract Mexican students and applauded the lower tuition rates that will now be afforded to Sinaloan residents.”

“Mexican students who had previously participated in exchanges with WNMU for English language studies were present to support the new initiative.”

I’d also pass legislation that would require any college receiving federally guaranteed student loans or federal grants, that extends in-state tuition to foreign students OR to “undocumented” aliens, these colleges MUST extend in-state tuition to out-of-state American students as well.

I don’t know about other states, but the entire University of North Carolina system was expressly chartered for the benefit of the citizens of NC. However, it’s become a university system for the benefit of foreigners and New Jersey. They pay more money to attend. It’s gotten very difficult for a prospective student from NC to be admitted to the flagship schools, UNC and NC State, or even to the lesser ones such as Appalachian State. This needs to change. The money grubbing is detrimental to the charter and to the people who are paying for it.

How about no federal subsidies or aid for anyone? If foreigners want to come here and pay for college why should we care at all? There is no shortage of places to take their money.

Yeah, sure, schools have always liked foreign “diversity”, because that has always been a draw for American students and their parents.

But the colleges I am familiar with now (and private high schools too), target foreign students (e.g., Chinese, Japanese, and wealthy Latin American) because their families will pay full load. Meanwhile, most American students do indeed get some sort of aid package—rather than paying the rack rate.

Exactly! Stop all the subsidies and academic will revert to being affordable for those who really are interested in and can make use of it.

There are a number of good ideas being considered in response here to the present problem. Rather than react to the present problem, I usually try to consider what the source was that caused the problem to eventually arise.

Conservatives regularly state that liberals dont understand economics and that academia lives in its own alternate reality. I think that the proof that this is true and that there is an underlying cultural problem in universities is put on display here for everyone to see.

Lets reimagine the problem using another large institution: McDonalds has found that foriegners are buying up all the hamburgers in NY. This has driven up the price of hamburgers at all burgershops and shut out a large segment of native population that wants hamburgers.

What would McDonald's do?

The answer to a large number of problems with all levels of education becomes quite obvious. Once the governments, the fed in particular, are removed from running education and chartered businesses have taken their place, most of the underlying issues in education would have been fixed provided we avoid any of the voucher scams so many faux conservatives peddle.

Very few Chinese students have their families paying for their college tuition. It is paid for by the Chinese government.

And they do not pay full load. I am familiar with it. They have "scholarships" set up for students from China. They also get preference as "teachers aides" which allows them to cut the tuition even further. The fact that the American students can't understand a word they say allows the college to claim that American students are dumb rather then they hired someone who can not speak English.

And unless you are talking sports scholarships very few American students get any aid unless you are talking about student loans. Those they do get. Calling that aid allows the college to fudge their numbers.

Ignoring reality does not change it.

But believe as you wish.

Student loan = Aid in this article which is exactly what I said was the case.

So this article proves my point.

About 40% of American college students get Pell grants, as just one example—and those are not sports based.

Pedro Girardi, 17, is another Brazilian student who is coming to U.S. to study at Carleton College, in Minnesota. He got a partial scholarship that covers most of his the costs after negotiating a deal with the financial aid office and getting some help from Brazil’s Fundação Estudar,” which helps Brazilian students find scholarships and financial aid.

I do believe this is exactly what I said was happening?

Pell grants are tiny and you will need student loans to fill the gaps. You will not be able to fill them with work study because those slots have been filled.

Guess by who?
