FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 07, 2017
WASHINGTON American Federation of Government Employees National President J. David Cox Sr. today issued the following statement about the nomination of Betsy DeVos for Secretary of the Department of Education:
The best agency leaders are those who are focused on creating an environment where employees have the tools and resources they need to advance the missions of their agencies. Unfortunately, its clear that Betsy DeVos, the nominee for Secretary of the Department of Education, does not value, nor is she motivated to carry out the agencys mission. DeVos has been an outspoken opponent of our public-school system. Rather than work to improve the education system that our democracy needs to create active, engaged and competitive citizens, DeVos has spent her career doing the exact opposite. We stand in solidarity with the American Federation of Teachers who rightly pointed out that DeVos has no meaningful experience in the classroom or in our schools.
The governments work is complex and touches nearly every American every day. We need leaders who understand the mission of the agency they lead and appreciate the role that government employees play in carrying out that work. President Trump ran on a platform of draining the swamp, but its clear that DeVos who proudly has said she expects a return on her investment of donations to Republicans is the wrong choice and could negatively impact a generation of students. We encourage members of the U.S. Senate to vote against the confirmation of Betsy DeVos.
Government Unions should mean the end of civil service protection. If they want to strike they can be treated as the Air Traffic Controllers. A 75% reduction in federal employees would be a good start.
Approval of government “worker” unions was by executive order. That means that they can be ended by executive order. Do it, President Trump...”for the children”.
Time for Trump and his new Education Secretary to make a live broadcast to the parents of DC and other large cities assuring them they will work to equalize OPPORTUNITY for the same educational choice enjoyed by members of Congress and lobbyists and other aggrieved snowflakes - who stand up for public education by sending their kids to private schools
That a plus for her, if you ask me. The standards for teaching have been lowered so much that it is really true that those that can’t do, teach. My kids are all adults that have kids of their own now, but back when they were in school I would confront teachers that taught them math that didn’t comprehend basic math themselves.
DeVos is right for the position. Now your incompetence and lack of interest in student achievement will be out in the open for all to see.
Ratchet this up, and tighten some bolts. WE ALWAYS needed some competition and creativity to help kids LEARN. It wasn;t able job security it was about teaching little ones NEW things.
Amazing how the Left keeps criticizing her stance against public “schools”. As if it were a bad thing.
I know, I know, it’s about the now defanged unions.
Most of these kids don’t even know about these so called social problems until they learn about them in the school system. Schools need to go back to teaching the basics.
The union I worked for had an employee from a community college that worked full time on union business. I worked in close proximity to him, and basically he spent his time on the phone with college staff about not getting along with some colleague. All at the taxpayer’s expense.
Over 50 posts and no “crybaby” photo yet???
**And there is what is wrong with Americas schools.**
And that’s what DeVos will change!
Celebrate!
I didn’t even know this was a “thing”. No wonder these cronies are crying bloody murder about the swamp being drained. They have so much to lose!
Yup!
Here’s the thing... when we beat the Nazis and restored democracy in Western Germany we and the new government drove out every last Nazi sympathizer in the government, made being a member of the Nazi Party illegal and made even any public reference to Hitler or Nazis illegal and punishable by fines and jail time. We did this to assure that Nazism was dead and would not rise again. WE HAVE TO DO THE SAME THING HERE TO LIBERALS. Once vanquished they must be driven out of power and the infrastructure cleansed or they will rise again... Jes sayin...
I think that if he can President Trump needs to sign an executive order to stop having union dues withheld from paychecks for federal employees. Let the employees write the checks themselves. I bet union membership will drop by at least 50%.
Ask Trump to do what Scott Walker Governor of Wisconsin did!
Walker in Act 10 stopped the collection of union dues by the state. And required 50% (not just the party regulars who vote)of actual membership to agree annually to have a union.
Nationally, no state has lost more of its labor union identity than Wisconsin since 2011, a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel analysis found. Union members made up 14.2% of workers before Act 10, but just 8.3% in 2015. That was nearly double the drop of Alaska, the runner up. From the Milwaukee Urinal.

They have lost 60% of the public teachers union membership.
It is not a responsible government to bargain with itself for public union members, when when one party get the donations from union members.
Public unions are corrupt, Wisconsin proved it.
The only union I ever belonged to represented clerks in a grocery store where I worked in the early 80’s.
Instead of the then-minimum wage of $3.35 union membership bought me a whole $3.50.
In return I had to pay $40 in dues each pay, which was $80 per month.
The President of our local union ended up going to prison from embezzling from the local. AND he was related to the owner of our store.
(so why did I stay?......dozens of female cashiers on-staff, all around my age)
WOOOHOOOO Betsy DeVos!!! CONGRATULATIONS.
(wake up intellectual abusers, AKA “teachers”)
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They’re quite aware of what they’re going through
Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
Ch-ch-Changes (Turn and face the strange)
Don’t tell them to grow up and out of it
Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes (Turn and face the strange)
Where’s your shame
You’ve left us up to our necks in it

HOORAY kids!!
She needs to shut it down, and let each state/local unit decide how much they want to actually educate. That would get the people involved in making sure the schools were well run.
