AFGE Statement on Nomination on DeVos for Education Secretary
American Federation of Government Employees ^ | February 07, 2017 | American Federation of Government Employees National President J. David Cox Sr.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 07, 2017

National President J. David Cox Sr. calls DeVos 'the wrong choice'

WASHINGTON – American Federation of Government Employees National President J. David Cox Sr. today issued the following statement about the nomination of Betsy DeVos for Secretary of the Department of Education:

“The best agency leaders are those who are focused on creating an environment where employees have the tools and resources they need to advance the missions of their agencies. Unfortunately, it’s clear that Betsy DeVos, the nominee for Secretary of the Department of Education, does not value, nor is she motivated to carry out the agency’s mission. DeVos has been an outspoken opponent of our public-school system. Rather than work to improve the education system that our democracy needs to create active, engaged and competitive citizens, DeVos has spent her career doing the exact opposite. We stand in solidarity with the American Federation of Teachers who rightly pointed out that DeVos has ‘no meaningful experience in the classroom or in our schools.’

“The government’s work is complex and touches nearly every American every day. We need leaders who understand the mission of the agency they lead and appreciate the role that government employees play in carrying out that work. President Trump ran on a platform of ‘draining the swamp,’ but it’s clear that DeVos – who proudly has said she expects a return on her ‘investment’ of donations to Republicans — is the wrong choice and could negatively impact a generation of students. We encourage members of the U.S. Senate to vote against the confirmation of Betsy DeVos.”

Mr Cox, an elitist among the education industrial complex makes the arrogant bureaucrats’ mistake in believing that it is the elites in the bureaucracy that can, unilaterally, define what the “mission” of the federal Department of Education is, not the people through their elected representatives & executives, and whom THEY appoint over the bureaucrats.

What now, a person who criticizes the system openly is not allowed to be in a position to change the system?

REALLY!!!!

All I need to know. She's qualified.

“The government’s work is complex and touches nearly every American every day.

Therein lies the problem. National defense should be the focus of the Federal government. Not indoctrinating yutes.

DeVos has ‘no meaningful experience in the classroom or in our schools.'

I'm sure she did go to schools as a child and young adult. So what he's saying is those schools didn't provide anything meaningful to her, which is what the problem is, so I agree.............

It would probably be better if Mr. Cox laid low for the next few years befor President Trump finds out he and the American Federation of Government Employees exist.

Rather than work to improve the education system that our democracy needs to create active, engaged and competitive citizens, DeVos has spent her career doing the exact opposite.

Our democracy needs to create active, engaged and competitive citizens. DeVos has spent her career improving our education systems by creating active, engaged and competitive citizens, especially in introducing the competition needed to encourage the public school system to improve itself.

As it stands, economically disadvantaged parents are forced to send their children to failing public schools, like the DC public schools characterized by drugs, crime, high drop out rates and poor scholarship.

It was a shame to see the disappointment of parents when the voucher system was terminated by the unions strongly defending their monopoly on failed school systems.

Translation: It’s all about the unions (not the kids).

Exactly right. I just heard Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth (D.) talk about how DeVos' appointment was an attack on the "equitable, public education of all America's school kids."

Equitable public education?

I get it: EVERYONE GETS THE SAME HORSESHIT QUALITY EDUCATION!

That's what the Democrats really want: to dumb all the kids down. Make them good little democrat/socialist/mind-numbed skulls full of mush robots.

NO! HELL NO!!! "Public" education is a JOKE and it needs to be burned to the ground.

They are no longer SCHOOLS. The historical gems of the United States have today become INDOCTINARIUMS.
I wonder how many of today’s High School Juniors could pass with a decent grade the old time EIGHTH GRADE exams.
Or how many could point to a blank world map and show the class where Syria is, or maybe the USA?
I miss the time when American students heard of an event somewhere and, in the minds, could picture the location.

If there must be a Dept of Ed, let it return to teaching that America is a Christian nation, founded by Christians, its Constitution written by Christians, its implementation and respect for the people of the nation is in the Bill of Rights also a Christian document, written by Christians.

Let those who ignore, deny or otherwise endanger these purposes and this people and this land be removed.

Do we fathom the difference this single restoration of purpose would make in reversing all our troubles, from the grassroots, upward?

Freedom of religion was not for displacing nor equalizing foreign gods with the Christian purpose that brought this nation up.

Immigration worked in the past because basically those in need were Western peoples with much in common with America. They were Christians and Jews, our elder brothers, or they were nothing at all, but they were not here to destroy Christians nor to disrespect our Founders, nor mock our documents.

The were ALLIES, not spawn of the blood thirsty enemy.

“Tools and resources” is code word for more money and benefits. Nothing to do with kids. These teachers unions are so radical they will strike, shut down schools, purposely fail the kids, everything they can to keep the gravy train going. As it is right now, they can’t be fired for any of those actions because of union rules, so something needs to be done about that. I see that they are getting Scott Walker’s advice on public employee unions which is a good thing.

And we should expect - no demand- that every “soldier” in the battle (especially those in Congress) has their own children in public schools!!
