DeVos moves closer to confirmation as education secretary

WASHINGTON (AP) — Betsy DeVos moved closer toward confirmation as education secretary Friday after clearing a major hurdle in the Senate, even as Democrats and labor unions fervently sought another Republican vote against her.

Tensions flew on the Senate floor during an early-morning session, with a senior Republican saying DeVos will make an "excellent" secretary and a top Democrat calling her "one of the worst nominees." Republicans overpowered Democrats, voting 52-48 to cut off debate on the nomination, setting the stage for a final vote Tuesday.

DeVos, a billionaire Republican donor, has faced fierce criticism from labor unions for her promotion of school choice. Democrats and teachers' organizations have accused her of seeking to dismantle public education and divert taxpayer money to charter schools and private school vouchers.

“a top Democrat calling her “one of the worst nominees.”

What a scumbag. No leftist should have a voice in anything, ever.

Sounds good to me. Let's get on with it.

From the earth being taught as a fact to be 5 million years old to Harry Potter night. . .as a new substitute teacher (retired for a few years), I am getting more than my fill of what education has become. Just how did America build bridges, skyscrapers, invent, etc,, etc., etc., etc. without the Common Core curriculum.

I have a simple rule; if Dems hate one of Trump’s picks then I like the pick even more. Think about it, if Dems like someone then you know Trump screwed up.

The only question is whether Vice President/President of the Senate Mike Pence will have to cast a tiebreaking vote.

DeVos is just more big government, federal education. We need LOCAL control of education, not more big government control.

and the GOP-E “mavericks” had DAMMED WELL BETTER get back in the paddock and vote right for this nominee

if the GOP-E shafts one of our President’s very first nominees (and a nominee that looks pretty good, too!)...
they’re Politically FINISHED!

grumph! (Arizona, Maine, South Carolina...you nice folks really do have to elect better senator(s)!)

It doesn’t make sense for Collins and Murkowski to vote for cloture then vote against the nominee.

“DeVos is just more big government, federal education. We need LOCAL control of education, not more big government control.”

Are you for real? DeVos is much better than any who have gone before her and any who would replace her (even under Trump) if she should be blocked. In addition, she has 99% of Dems foaming at the mouth. I contribute 10% of my own money to get her confirmed.

They didn’t vote for Obamacare, and I doubt they voted for cloture, as the Dems had 60 at the time.

What happened to Collins and Murkowski? I thought they were voting against her.
