Mayor of New Hope comes out as transgender

NEW HOPE, Texas - The appointed mayor of a small town in Collin County announced in an open letter to her citizens that she is transgender.

Jess Herbst is the mayor of New Hope, Texas. It’s a town of 600 people east of McKinney. Mayor Herbst posted a letter on the town’s website explaining her transition from Jeff to Jess and her decision to live her life as a female.

“I do hope that it helps people understand that we are just normal people like everyone else,” she said.

Herbst has served as city alderman since 2003 and was just appointed as mayor last May. She's now coming out as transgender, something she says she's known about her whole life. But until recently, most residents knew her as Jeff.

“For the last six months, the only time I've ever dressed as a man was at city council meetings,” she explained.

Herbst was appointed mayor in May because the previous mayor died and finally decided she wanted to tell the town what she says she's known most of her life.

Growing up as a young boy in Texas, she always knew she was transgender and started telling family members about eight years ago as more information on the transgender community came out.

“When I would go to school and I would see here's the girls, here's what they're doing, here's how they're dressing, here's how they're acting, I wanted to be in that group,” Herbst said. “But I wasn't allowed to be.”

3 days on local news. 2 days on the Yahoo news feed. It’s getting old.

FWIW, I work with the guy. He’s a contractor where I work and he keeps our Macs running properly. From the first time I met him, I suspected this. During our regular Monday meetings, I’d occasionally see the leftover eye liner that didn’t wash all the way off after a weekend of playing dress up. And the long, shiny fingernails that just weren’t normal. “Maybe he plays guitar,” I thought ... trying to dismiss the thoughts.

Then one day at lunch, he spilled the beans. I was not shocked. But I was shocked that no one else suspected it. This happened a few months ago and since then, he has been showing up to work in drag. It’s odd, to say the least.

That said ... Jeff is a good guy. It’s a really weird situation to me, but most at work don’t seem to be bothered by it. If they are, they’re not showing it.

Now that’s weird, never would have figured a freeper would have first hand knowledge of this guy. There was a movie years ago called “Normal” with Jessica Lange and an actor whose name escapes me right now. It is nearly exactly this story.

This guy is definitely not normal and it’s not fair to other people to try and force them to believe it is.

I suppose I don't have a particular problem with an ADULT deciding to play at being the other sex. But when children are brought into it, it makes my blood boil. In my opinion, allowing a minor child to declare himself "transgender" is a criminal act. Raise your children the sex they were born and let them decide once they are adults.

Also, I have a tip for grown men who want to go this way. Please put a little effort into making yourselves at least semi-attractive. If you are going to end up looking like Robert Plant or Janet Reno, why bother?
