WASHINGTON (Reuters) - About 900 U.S. State Department officials signed an internal dissent memo protesting a travel ban by U.S. President Donald Trump on refugees and travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries, a source familiar with the document said on Tuesday, in a rebellion against the new president's policies.

A senior State Department official confirmed the memorandum had been submitted to acting Secretary of State Tom Shannon through the department's "dissent channel," a process in which officials can express unhappiness over policy (http://bit.ly/2jOYW0y).

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said on Monday he was aware of the memo but warned career diplomats that they should either "get with the program or they can go."

A draft of the dissent memo seen by Reuters argued that the executive order would sour relations with affected countries, inflame anti-American sentiment and hurt those who sought to visit the United Spates for humanitarian reasons.

It said the policy "runs counter to core American values of non-discrimination, fair play and extending a warm welcome to foreign visitors and immigrants.

Trump on Friday signed an executive order that temporarily bans refugees and people from seven Muslim-majority countries, sparking tumult at U.S. airports and protests in major American cities.

Remember when Reagan fired the air traffic controllers?

We got past it. Moved some people over from the military, brought people back from retirement, recruited people left and right, and we survived it.

We should do the same thing now. There are probably 900 army officers with overseas experience, 900 oil company execs with overseas experience, 900 missionaries with overseas experience, who could be pressed into service and we’d never miss a beat.

How convenient of them to provide an accurate list of people who are security risks.

I think many of them are about to experience the real world.

... that the executive order would sour relations with affected countries, ...

Iraq, Iran, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Libya and Yemen

I recognize that there are some talented mathematicians and even a few scientists from these countries that are not aligned with their government, especially Persians.

But their government has disintegrated or is at open war with the West. And all of these countries are loosely (at least) supporting Iran in the Muslim world, who has pledged to do us harm.

Every embassy has ways of granting entry visas to persons that support the US and are in grave danger from their own governments.

There is no practical way to vet these visitors, much less to vet a true “immigrant” from any of these countries.

Ask them for letters of resignation. Let them quit. Otherwise, fire them!

Remember Pres. Reagan’s firing of the PATCO air traffic controllers? That was gutsy and set the tone for the respect he had…in spite of the Democrats, who were in charge of Congress, melting down and the media excoriating him. President Trump’s legions of supporters would say “YES!” if he called for every one of these protesters to get on board or resign, and if they ignore him, he can say, “YOU’RE FIRED!”
