Shattuck: NFL's message clear; no politics
The Boston Herald ^ | 02-01-2017 | Tom Shattuck

HOUSTON — It is time for even the most ardent supporter to admit that there is a problem with the guy at the top. The brash New Yorker’s all-consuming and neurotic insistence on controlling the message has virtually sidelined the fourth estate.

Dangerous stuff.

Welcome to the world of Roger Goodell. A world in which the commissioner simply deletes what does not please him, or God forbid, might embarrass him. Between Deflategate and Trump, Roger has some flanks to cover.

Roger Goodell is a coward, sure, but we’ve entered crazy territory. The election of President Trump has rattled the minds of many in the country.

So badly that the NFL won’t talk about it. Instead we’ll learn that coach Belichick enjoys “Maryland crabs with Old Bay seasoning.” That is what was talked about at “Super Bowl Opening Night” according to the NFL. That, and apparently not much else.

They should forbid any politicking in the NFL. It’s a business and a brand. It’s not a forum for free speech. I don’t understand why they allow that. You can’t wear a piece of equipment with a logo on it, so why would you be allowed to take a knee during the Anthem.

Sure it’s free country, but freedom has consequences. You express your beliefs, then fine, you’re out of here. there are rules.

This is the gutless wonder Roger Goodell. I doubt that I’ll be watching ten minutes of the game. Couldn’t care less.

Oh, and you know good and well that Lady Gaga will bash Trump whenever she can.

Well hopefully by 2021-2022, they will have seen the light.

That’s about the earliest my team, The Jets, will possibly have a team worth putting on the field.

All businesses that are entering the fray are doing so at the urging of libs. We never demand anything of these people besides behaving like a human and delivering the product expected. You would think a CEO could figure that out.

Colin Kaeperpunk tanked their ratings, and Goodell KNOWS it. He can’t criticize the black dude, but he damn sure it going to try and head of any further damage.

I don’t care if I get labeled a misogynist, but here’s the truth: Football is a man’s sport...Not to say many women don’t enjoy it, but at its heart, Football is about raw masculinity....the mistake started when the NFL got greedy and tried to include EVERYONE and started to water down the product in the name of diversity.

Was never a Patriots fan but I am now. The Leftist sports Media have vilified Brady and Belichick for being friendsSome Falcons players have said they won’t go to the White House if they win. I hope the Patriots leave the Falcons looking like a plucked chicken Sunday night.

Not to worry—some lame-brained lefty football player or staffer will be unable to resist the temptation to display their virtue and denounce Trump.

Tick, tick, tick...

The NFL has been all politics, all the time this season. It’s not that they don’t want to do politicis, it is that they don’t want dissenting voices of patriots to be heard.

It’s Black Lies Matter, 24-7. And they can have the Superbowl without me.

Somehow, some way, liberals have managed to screw up the NFL - and it didn’t take very long.

exactly... if an athlete wants to take a position, he/she needs to do it on his/her time, on his/her PERSONAL platform... same with managers, coaches, etc...

and the same with actors... not at awards shows... there was a time when actors made political statements at these awards programs, they were then banned from future appearances...

The NFL, like many large concerns, forgot that their job is to sell folks a product at a price they are willing to pay. Placing semi-literate buttholes pushing political agendas to a largely patriotic audience worketh not.

Shove it, Godell, and shove it, NFL.

Always remember the NFL motto: Our felons are better jocks than your felons.

Courage is bad in the entertainment business. Be a coward, put on a great football game, leave politics to the rest of the world.

Nope. It was the election. Rating bounced back once that was over. And are up in the playoffs.

Colin Kaeperpunk tanked their ratings.

It's crazy. We were watching that Superbowl Best Commercials program last night (Mrs. R is a sucker for Clydesdales and puppies), and they previewed a commercial with CK peddling Buicks.

GM must have lost their minds. My 85 y.o. mother-in-law drives a Buick. If GM is looking for a new demographic, America-hating punks wouldn't be the pool I would dip in.
