A U.S. Special Operations member died of injuries suffered during a weekend raid against al-Qaida militants in Yemen, the military said Sunday.
Three other American troops, members of a Navy SEAL unit, were wounded in the operation on Saturday.
A defense official, said the slain service member was killed in a firefight with militants. According to a statement from U.S. Central Command (Centcom), 14 militants were killed during the operation.
The raid, which took place in a remote desert area of Yemen's Shabwa governorate, aimed to obtain intelligence information, including computer material, that was thought to be linked to planning for external attacks.
The assault, a Yemeni official said, killed 35 to 40 people in the village. U.S. troops, the official said, descended from helicopters, as militants had gathered for a late-night session of chewing qat, the leafy narcotic used by most Yemeni males. A lengthy battle followed. Many homes were destroyed, said the official.
The operation also killed 15 women and children, said the official, including the 8-year-old daughter (Nawar or Nura Al-Awlaki) of the late radical-Yemeni-American cleric, Anwar Al-Awlaki.

The op began at dawn when a drone bombed the home of Abdulraoof al- Dhahab. A helo assault then killed everyone inside.
Apache helicopters struck after the drone strikes. One, was a school, a mosque and a medical facility which were all used by Al-Qaeda militants. There were reported to be two training camps in Yakla.

Unverified that Anwar al-Awlaki's widow (who was an al-Dhahab) died with her daughter. That woulds be the last of them, the al-Awlaki's.
a school, a mosque, and a hospital? interesting.
Head fake. He asked for a 30 day plan. He already had a plan and is executing. Ahead of schedule, under budget. God bless those who are at the tip of the spear. God receive our brave departed. We are with them as they open the giant can of whoopass.
>> al-Qaida militants
I thought Obama defeated al-Qaida — he and the MSM said so.
And now we’re dealing with Obama’s sycophantic thugs running amok around the Country.
Prayers for the soul of this hero and for his family. Prayers for the wounded.
The wounded will all recover and return to duty, hard landing in that Osprey at the op lz used for staging and refueling. Seals are tough.
We never got details like this when Obama was President. Is this because Trump is more open about the mission or because the news media wants to destroy Trump by publicizing every U.S. service member death?
I trust they collected good intel, of which I don’t want them to tell us or the media one word! I’ll be happy to infer it between the lines of censored future successful mission reports. Trump’s been in a week and has had his first op. Supposedly it had in the planning for months. How many months did it take O’Bungle to approve the Bin Laden raid? How long ago could he have carried this out?
And every civilian casualty.
Post #1 comes from my own sources. The media gets so much wrong that I felt I needed to supply the back story.
There was also a drone strike about a week ago that is connected, Yemen is a complex theater. The tribes are so connected, yet so competitive that they often rat each other out.
Obama held back on a lot of ops to kowtow to the Saudi’s. We work with the Emirates a lot.
We could have moved up the bin Laden raid about two weeks, that’s all. We waited for the dark of the moon.
“In a statement released by the White House, Trump called the raid “successful” and that it resulted in the capture of intelligence that would “assist the U.S. in preventing terrorism against its citizens and people around the world.”
Excellent work!
Rest in Heaven to our soldier. God give peace to his family
Information was leaked. Not cool.
Good news there.
Oh, I know they are tough. May God watch and protect these brave men.
My local news said this operation was planned a while back by the Obama, but Trump gave the authorization to proceed.
I’ve asked several times, but get no answer or even any suggestion of a connection. Was the timing of the ban from that area connected to the raid? It would just make sense to stop people from that neighborhood from getting on planes to the US, especially if they somehow got advance knowledge or what was being planned.
Ospreys are expensive.
Probably over 100 million dollars, as adapted for SOF use.
Probably someone on the ground hit one of the rotor pods with an RPG.
Here is a source that says the SOF version of the Osprey is the CV-22 and costs $90 million.
