President Donald Trump said Friday that he will defer to the judgment of Defense Secretary James Mattis that torture and waterboarding should continue to be banned in the interrogations of terror suspects.
"He has stated publicly that he does not necessarily believe in torture or waterboarding or however you want to define it," Trump said of Mattis, a retired Marine general who had commands in Iraq and Afghanistan. "I don't necessarily agree, but he [Mattis] will override because I'm giving him that power."
"I'm going to rely on him" on so-called "enhanced interrogation techniques," Trump said, though "I happen to believe it does work."
Trump said Mattis told him in December that he could get more out of a terror suspect with "a pack of cigarettes and a beer" than he could with torture.

It was my understanding that both Seals and SpecOps are trained using water-boarding.
Is that not so anymore ..?? And, if it is so, will Mattis stop it ..??

Waterboarding is not torture. Trump and Mattis need to clarify.
But also never telegraph what you will and won’t do.
I read General Mattis has a bear rug in his living room. Its not dead but too scared to move.
The pack of beer and cigs approach worked fairly well in WWII. It has been tried on islamists and does not work in most cases.
These people have a belief system and a god they fear.
You don’t necessarily need to use waterboarding but you do need ‘enhanced interrogation’, i.e. make them miserable. No sleep, alternating heat and cold, loud recordings of screaming babies etc. You also need to break down their faith to get the best results - which we have never done.
Mattis is great but he is old school and from everything I read he doesn’t understand islam. He thinks he is fighting terrorists or extremists.

I know it’s unpopular but there is a difference between the radicals and Islam itself. I don’t know why it’s so hard to understand. People move their own needle however they want. It’s like the Constitution and liberalism. Liberals think the constitution is living and should be moved for the times. You don’t think there are liberals who believe in Islam?
Seriously, that would kill anyone.
Trump will defer, and that is a good leader. That does not mean that he’ll not take initiative if it’s a high level case and there are high stakes on the line.
Trump is no dope, and he’ll get what he needs to done.
