Currently, a half-billion dollars in taxpayer money is given to National Public Radio (NPR) and Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) each year. Trump plans to do away with that. The Hill has reported:
“The Trump Administration needs to reform and cut spending dramatically, and targeting waste like the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities would be a good first step in showing that the Trump Administration is serious about radically reforming the federal budget,” said Brian Darling, a former aide to Paul and a former staffer at the Heritage Foundation.
The Regan Administration attempted something similar in the 1980s, but was ultimately convinced against it. One of the cases made was that the government owes the American people access to news/information. Back then, there was no internet, only a few dozen televisions/news radio stations. They saw it as an actual public service (perhaps, rightly so). Today, however, broadcast television and FM radio is in a major decline with fewer and fewer viewers every year. After all, who feels like waiting for the 6 o’clock news when you can just hop on the internet and get real-time news and current events?
On the Bernie Sanders campaign trail, he loved claiming that Norway was better than America. Well, Norway is planning to eliminate FM radio altogether. FM radio and satellite television are dying media forms that have been kept alive and propped up by government spending and the bureaucracy, so isn’t it good that we’re pulling federal funding? If are profitable and do in fact have a strong audience, they wouldn’t need to be subsidized with taxpayer money. Well, Hollywood doesn’t think so:

Reagan tried this back in 1985 or ‘86, and NPR/PBS went absolutely out of their minds.
They essentially dropped every other subject, and went wall-to-wall with protest stories and dire descriptions of how the First Amendment would die if their gravy train wasn’t kept rolling.
Reagan, who at the time was worried about other things, relented.
Defund / defenestrate.
National People’s Radio and People’s Broadcasting Service should fund themselves any way they choose. We should not be paying for their anti-American propaganda.

Used to contribute to them years and years ago. On a pretty regular basis we receive a huge packet in the mail wanting us to contribute. Asked to be taken off their mailing list lots of times but they refuse to do so so it’s just thrown in the trash. Expect they will step up their fundraising now.

Oh, I hope and pray this is done. If people want to contribute to them, I have no problem with it, but do not allocate my tax dollars towards this. I would rather my tax dollars go towards taking care of our veterans.

Phase it out. Depoliticize it so no one will claim Trump is killing Big Bird. No more psycholib news network. Let the commies and greens (same thing) fund their own antiamerican news network.

I daresay your triumphalism gives me a woody.
I have pointed out before on duplicate threads and got criticized for it. Not everyone sees all the posts and duplicate threads serve a purpose was the rationale. I agree as not everyone will read through 10 pages of FR to see what they want, but there has to be a way to preclude duplicate threads. Maybe the mods should be more proactive. What is your take on this?
