After years of development, protest and regulatory red tape, the first genetically modified, non-browning apples will soon go on sale in the United States.
The fruit, sold sliced and marketed under the brand Arctic Apple, could hit a cluster of Midwestern grocery stores as early as Feb. 1. The limited release is an early test run for the controversial apple, which has been genetically modified to eliminate the browning that occurs when an apple is left out in the open air.
Critics and advocates of genetic engineering say that the apple could be a turning point in the nations highly polarizing debate over genetically modified organisms (GMOs). While genetic modifications have in the past been mainly defended as a way to protect crops, the Arctic Apple would be one of the first GMOs marketed directly to consumers as more convenient.

An apple that never spoils? I can see a market for it.
Just rub lemon juice on it and the slice will not brown.
But just how do they expect one to make an Apple Brown Betty ever again?
Perhaps what would have been better than GM, would be to cross an apple with a lemon. Might have to peel it though...
It will spoil. It just won’t turn that unappetizing brown color if you leave cut surfaces exposed to air for more than a few minutes.
Are they stayman winesap?
Not worth it otherwise!
Yes, I must be able to buy pre-sliced apples because slicing an apple is just so difficult and inconvenient.
They hate science.
Next up, GM humans who feel no pain. Who will be the first person to try eating a rotten apple with 2 broken arms?

Seems like a solution in search of a problem.
Bet they taste like Twinkies.
I think I’ll wait 20 or 30 years and see how many people it kills. By that time I’ll be dead anyway. Old age.

Fun fact: Scientific studies show that red haired fair skin people feel much less pain than other humans and often require double the painkillers to achieve the same pain killing effect for surgery.
Or a McDonalds cheeseburger
Do this for bananas and I am all in.
“Are they stayman winesap?”
The Winesap crop was a disappointment here in the Blue Ridge this year. It didn’t frost until late in the third week of October and by that time they were ripe but not sweet.
