Zero Hedge

Shortly after Donald Trump made good on one of his core campaign promises on Monday morning by signing an executive order formally withdrawing the U.S. from the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade deal, Trump told labor union leaders that he would renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement "at the appropriate time."

The remarks came at the start of a meeting at the White House with leaders of construction, carpenters, plumbers and sheet metal unions, during which Trump pledged to stop trade deals that harmed American workers.

According to the White House, participants included North America's Building Trades Unions President Sean McGarvey, Laborers' International Union of North America President Terry O'Sullivan, SMART sheet metal workers' union President Joseph Sellers, United Brotherhood of Carpenters President Doug McCarron and Mark McManus, president of the United Association that represents plumbers, pipefitters, welders and others. The union meeting also included several local union officials and follows a gathering of 12 chief executives of large companies at the White House to discuss revitalizing the U.S. manufacturing economy.

“This is a group that I know well,” Trump said referring to the union bosses, adding “we’re going to put a lot of people back to work” and “stop the ridiculous trade deals.”

When Trump said the administration “just officially terminated TPP,” it prompted applause from the labor chiefs (and this time it certainly wasn't by paid members of the studio audience), who later described their meeting with Trump as "incredible."

Not necessarily. If his policies are pro-growth, and they support at least those specific policies, they stand to gain on the up and up. The Dems have such a long list of special interest groups, including the ones that favor runaway regulation, that they can’t hardly pander to one without screwing two others, and I think the unions may have been getting the short end of the liberal stick lately (with the exception of stuff like admin support for card-check and the NLRB shafting Boeing over the SC move).

And where there are enough job classifications and you can move people by merit so that you can reward the ambitious and capable without having to drag along the complacent, lazy, and merely adequate.

Government unions have no other purpose than politics. They should be illegal.

Exactly. Unions are the piggy bank of the democratic machine. Trump just put that in play without compromising conservative principles and promoting America. He is a genius.

Art of the Deal. Classic Trump maneuver.

SEIU is not a manufacturing or trades union. The trades and manufacturing unions are at the head of the line.

Immigration: The building trades are directly affected. Plus steel and other building materials.

SEIU could not attend because they were conspiring the next strike.”

Noticed on Drudge that Kroger is planning to hire about 10,000 “workers”. When I was in our local Kroger in Houston suburbs last week noticed that the SEIU rep was there in his uniform shirt and their union label is on the front store window. In the meantime, more and more people are using the self-check lanes.

IIRC, it was WH SpokesMAN Spicer who said the Trump Administration already had business/industry committments to create around 1.3 million new jobs.

Quite a fete, considering he has been in office 3 days. Obama couldn’t get that in 8 years.

Many of those 1.3 million would be union jobs and that means more money for the unions via dues.

The Democrats just lost their unions. More shrinkage of their base.

Trump will win over the blacks as well. He will do the unthinkable: He will engage them in an honest conversation about employment, crime, education and family. The very act of sitting down at the table with them will change everything. Forcing then to an honest view of the facts will forever change how we view the races.

Americans of every stripe will respond positively when Trump enforces the laws on the books. People want law, order and civility in America again.

The times they are a-changing.

"How could trade deals impact building unions? As far as I know, China is not making buildings and shipping them here."

I'm pretty sure that Chinese companies and Chinese laborers have been building bridges in California. California even rejected stimulus money to avoid "buy American" clauses in Obama's stimulus bill.

Bad omen for economic freedom, low taxes, and economic growth. The unions are not going to endorse ANY Republican without getting a whole lot in return.

They will get good paying jobs for their member in return when industry starts to move back in...

If the Democrats lose this demographic they are going to have a very difficult time replacing it.

Since they're out of ideas, and evidently fresh out of non-SEIU union members, they're left with gender, pigmentation, ethnicity and/or religion as a reason to vote for them.

There was increasingly less and less reason for the blue collar middle class to be democrat. The democrats have decided to side with illegal immigrants against the middle class, and so the middle class went with Trump. Some of this is just recognizing that their base is already with Trump, some of this is that Trump is going to be there for four years so they have to play ball with him. But I think by 2020, the union organizations will be moved over to the Trump side in a real realignment.
