The first time Donald J. Trump stepped onstage in Pennsylvania in April 2016 at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, it was clear something very different was going on in this state, with this candidate.
It was not because the rally was massive, or because it was boisterous, or that it was poorly organized, though all those things were true.
Having already attended 18 of his rallies throughout primary states across the country, I found, in fact, that it looked very familiar.
It was different because it was in Pennsylvania.
It was a campaign that was designed to fail from the very beginning.
Trump had no grass-roots organization in the first caucus state of Iowa, while former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush had locked up the best operative in the Hawkeye State. Trump didnt have any street cred with evangelical voters, while Texas Sen. Cruz not only had that, he had an app to get them out to vote.
Trump lost Iowa to Cruz, but not by much. Bush was dealt a devastating blow, finishing in sixth place, a bruising indictment of all things establishment....

Great article! I bet he could have won Centre County too in Nov, with a visit closer than Johnstown or Harrisburg. Then the state wouldn’t have that little blue blob in the center.
Bookmarked.
Wow! Salena is writing for the New York Post now?
Congrats Salena!
As for the article, she wrote:
“All he needed were the rallies.
It was the secret sauce that reporters, pollsters, academics and critics almost all missed.”
Major Garrett explained on TV that he had to fight what his caste was telling him about Trump, and instead, open his mind to seeing what was right in front of him two to three times a day: massive enthusiastic crowds coming out to see Trump.
I’m guessing by Election Day Eve, Major already knew Trump would win.

Tell it!
President Trump’s instincts were right then and they are right now. The “fake” media will attempt to take him down with a thousand little cuts, and his press secretary reacted exactly right on Sunday when he came out, eyes blazing, over the ridiculous Inauguration numbers comparison to Obama’s. That even some on FOXNEWS tried to make that a big deal against our President was very disappointing. Anyone with a brain knows that story has NO significance at all. If the media, as a whole is feeling threatened by our technology which allows our President to go over their heads directly to the people, then, TOO BAD! That fact makes it much harder for them to peddle their fake news and that is a great thing for this country.
Speaking of trolls, I cannot help but notice you have been an exalted member since Nov 2, 2016....Are you suggesting one of our longest and most respected members is a troll newbie? Move along child and let the adults post
The term "misunderestimate" has a new meaning....
Isn't that the entire point of a campaign?
Cruz and everyone else knew Trump was destined to fail and he triumphed despite having more folks against him than any other candidate in history.
Magnificent! So happy to say PRESIDENT TRUMP!
Actually that’s smoke and distortion
Here’s what happened
Kushner’s campaign efforts will be studied by political scientists for evermore
Ahhh...I had forgotten about the Cruz comment. Thank you for the clarification.
