Robert Sheridan is a 40-year-old GM worker who voted for Donald Trump. He can barely contain his excitement about Inauguration Day, even though it will be a rough day for him on a personal level.
He's one of 2,000 GM factory workers losing their jobs on Friday, the same day that Trump will be sworn in as the 45th president.
Sheridan -- and thousands like him -- are desperately hoping Trump will save their jobs.
"Please help us in Lordstown," says Sheridan, a soft-spoken Midwesterner with three kids. "This is a great middle class job. You can't find one better around here."
These are GM's first layoffs in six years. About 1,200 workers in Lordstown, Ohio (where Sheridan works) are getting the ax and another 800 in Lansing, Michigan -- both key states that led to Trump's victory. Given the vote totals, many of these workers likely voted for Trump, breaking ranks with the United Automobile Workers union that backed Hillary Clinton.
Trump appeared to hear their outcry. In early January, he slammed GM in a tweet.
"General Motors is sending Mexican made model of Chevy Cruze to U.S. car dealers-tax free across border," Trump tweeted.

It ended up costing us 10.8 billion, never recovered.
I guess that allowed GM to build these new plants outside the US. And close the US manufacturing down anyway.
The problem is that those jobs are not being picked up by one of the domestic competitors, but by foreign workers.
This is most certainly not a good image for those concerned about government interference in their business. And it nearly eliminates any moral argument on behalf of "Free Trade".
Note how the headline implies that it’s Trump’s fault...
Get rid of these crap EPA rules that I will never pay for on my car.I want a car I CAN FIX!! No COMPUTER CRAP!! I want it NOW!!n AMERICA FIRST!!
If it’s from cnn, you can bet there’s a LOT more to this story.
Coming on 18Jan immediately gives it the smell of another hit piece.

GM seems to enjoy poking a stick at DJT.
Not a good business plan.
Yup. The media is shameless.
Absolutely!!! This was in the works well before Trump was elected...Businesses don’t do this on a spur of the moment...
Just a tune-up for the coming 8 years of Fake News crap.
You should read the story.
Yep. Saw that.
To be expected from the Clinton News Network.
Government Motors has had a couple of breaks not necessarily available to other automobile manufacturers, but then, they were not forced to declare bankruptcy, for which there was certainly plenty of compelling reasons.
Not the least of which would have been to shed a LOT of the bloated retirement benefits that were WAY beyond the perks that most retirees receive.
Perhaps the remainder of what was once GM could have been picked up by a foreign corporation, as what happened with Chrysler.
I want to burn cheap gas, drive a fast car with a convertible top and not want to be bothered by ANY level of govt!!
It would be a shame if freight trains heading into the USA from Mexico laden with GM cars were sabotaged. A darn shame.
Of course. It’s CNN.
Obama Motors not doing so well?
Again?
What !?
And fly in the face of FR tradition ?!
(lol .. prolly will in the morning ;-)
and this has WHAT to do with Trump...as it is intended to imply?
You are going to have to full Cuba and remanufacture old vehicles.
I remember the Corvair and Pinto.
I’m okay with some regulations.
