PHOENIX (AP) Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey's decision to again take for other uses state gas tax money intended to help cities and counties build and repair roads is getting a cold reception from some in the Legislature.
The Republican governor's budget proposal for the year starting July 1 eliminates $86.5 million in highway spending in the current year, a decision likely to spur a fight with lawmakers from both parties who have been seeking a permanent stop to shifts of cash for road work to other uses.
Legislation that would bar the practice and require gas tax money only be spent on roads has been introduced in the Senate with both Democratic and Republican sponsors.

Look out for toll roads just ahead.

Geezers man....that’s how California started its march to its current state
Is the money being spent on state union pensions? Are the union goons crying the loudest?
How bad can streets in Tuscon really get with no snow and freezing to cause heaves?
eliminate the gas tax and privatize the highways
let the free market regin
Add Mitch Daniels to that list. The theft was not quite as direct, but leasing out a toll road to a private company with an up-front slush payment from them is the same effect.
“eliminate the gas tax and privatize the highways...let the free market regin”
Sure, at least for people that have 20 cents to $1 per mile to pay to use the highways (going rate for private highways, due to their monopoly protection).
Pretty bad, and worse in Pima County, where Tucson is. Excuses here -
Sun, heat and severe monsoon rain storms (over one inch of rain in an hour is frequent) can damage the asphalt as much as snow and freezing.
An article here from the local left wing Arizona Red Star -

With this quote -
The memo comes as 60 percent of the roads under Pima Countys purview are rated poor to failing and the county gears up for its annual budget discussions.
No
Our nation has a vested interest in keeping the highways open and free of greedy corporate interests.
What we need to do is pass a law that makes taking gas tax funds for other purposes, to be a felony level offense.
Privatize the highways and you’ll soon be paying a fee every five miles down the road. Not no, but HELL NO!
socialism is something you believe in ?
you believe you are entitled to pay less than the cost for using the road ?
.
Streets in Tucson are in excellent shape; that is where the leftie loons call home.
.
.
The socialists are the biggest promotors of toll roads.
They love the big campaign contributions that keep them in office.
There is no free market angle to toll roads.
.
If I pay over 2 cents per mile, then I’m paying MORE than it costs to operate the road.
That’s no longer a free market...it’s a monopoly.
Giving parents tax deductions is now considered social engineering?
You never took the deductions alloed for your children.
Wow...
That other post was off base, because I came from a post where I was addressing social engineering and I triggered on that with your post.
Every road is an example of socialism.
You and the folks across the street didn’t build the section of road in front of your homes. Your city, county, or state did.
I think it’s important that federal highways remain government perview.
I’ve been to some states where you can hit six to ten toll booths driving an afternoon trip. When you return, you have to hit them again.
So no, I don’t want to privatize roads and have twenty to fifty different corporations charging tolls for their strip of roadway in just one state.
Pretty soon you’re back to the dark ages with modern concepts of highwaymen who fleece you before you can pass.
Nah... they are spending Tucson money on more socialistic stuff. Their roads are bad too -
EZ pass solves your concern
It’s odd that my fellow Freepers advocate Capitalism in theory, but socialism for highways.
highways are no different than any other good, let the free market reign - prices will drop, quality rise
.
No, their roads are excellent, I have driven them sufficiently to attest to that fact.
.
.
We do not advocate “capitalism” at all; we advocate for a free and open market without government interference.
Capitalism is a tyrannical system under which those in power choose the winners and losers.
Toll roads are capitalism in many cases, but in no case are they freedom.
