Dear FReepers: this is important breaking news. Please go to the article at the link.

Theresa May is committed to a 'proper' BREXIT - one that leaves the UK able to form its own trade agreements with the whole world, and that frees it from the odious EU customs union and from the European Court of Justice.

A lot of us in Britain had feared that the civil service, the courts and the Foreign Office would contrive to dilute BREXIT and end up defying the will of the people.

Well, they may yet. But Theresa's speech is the clearest possible declaration of intent.

It also signals that the environment for a clean BREXIT is good - i.e. we have trade deals lined up.

I don't think it hurt when Teddy Malloch recently declared that Great Britain would be at the "front of the queue". The US will now, after all, be the largest market in the world (i.e. larger than the EU without the UK).

So thank you President-Elect Trump. And thank you, American people. The prospects for a clean BREXIT, with new trade deals, got a lot better once the spectre of a Hillary! Whitehouse faded from view.

I’d love to see us do the same with Eastern Europe. I’m hoping, starting with Poland and Hungary, they will also bail from the EU.

Go Brexit.

Britains have been free and independent people an awful long time. No reason to let Germany conquer through the phony front EU what it couldn’t conquer with armies.

-—“great, global trading nation” that is “respected around the world and strong, confident and united at home”.-—

For those of you from Rio Linde, being global does not equate with globalism. Trading around the world means you don’r become isolationist

I cannot help but wonder how many Remain voters opposed Brexit do to all the fearmongering from those claiming that Brexit would kill the economy.

“In remarks that will delight Conservative Eurosceptics, Mrs May will pledge that Britain outside the European Union will be a “great, global trading nation””

To paraphrase, she will: “Make Britain Great Again”

"I must be clear Britain wants to remain a good friend and neighbour to Europe," she said.

"Some voices are calling for a punitive deal, that punishes Britain and discourages other countries from taking the same path. That would be an act of calamitous self-harm for the countries of Europe and it would not be the act of a friend.

Nice one May!

It's the simple truth. We run a trade deficit with the EU: which means that on net, we buy their stuff, not the other way round.

At current trade levels, the UK is the largest trade partner of the EU.

If we started buying all our cars from e.g. the US, then Germany would suffer badly.

Be under no illusions though. The EU is just bat-cr*p insane enough to maim itself, just to ensure that no-one else leaves.

"contrive to dilute BREXIT"

I always thought Trump's first trade deal should be w/the UK as follows:

We take your Brexit folks, you take our refugees and illegal immigrants.
