An attempt to locate a bank robbery suspect is costing the city of Aurora $325,000.
The city agreed to settle a lawsuit brought forth by people who were detained at an intersection while police tried to find a man who robbed a nearby bank. Some motorists were approached at gunpoint by police following the robbery, handcuffed and made to wait two hours before the scene was cleared.
Stacks of money stolen from the bank contained a GPS tracking device that led police to the intersection. When police arrived in the area, they weren't able to use GPS to specifically pinpoint the suspected criminal. That's when officers began detaining drivers in the area in an attempt to locate the suspect.
Nearly 30 people were ordered out of their cars. Police eventually located a suspect in one of the vehicles.
Attorney David Lane, who represented the 14 plaintiffs, says the settlement was reached Thursday. The 14 sued the city for unlawful search and seizure after the June 2012 incident.
Justice was a long time coming, but it may have finally arrived.
a good outcome
Americans are not under military occupation
“Nearly 30 people were ordered out of their cars. Police eventually located a suspect in one of the vehicles.”
So it actually worked.
$325,000 divided by 14 is around $23,000.
But the lawyers will get most of it.
Say, $10K for sitting around a couple hours in service of catching bank robbers.
In class actions suits I believe the lawyer gets MUCH more than half.
It’s a PITTANCE for the credulous victims, in many cases nearly NOTHING.
Too bad the people of Boston are so far gone to the Commie side. You would think a few would sue Boston PD for the crap they pulled looking for the marathon bombers.
In class action litigation the lawyers can make up to 60% of the money awarded. That is bullshiite. That’s highway robbery anywhere else.
Chump change.
Justice demands a great deal more than any amount of money.
I’ve never seen that anyone has filed suit over that search. Don’t understand it. Just went looking again.
Actually, no, it isn’t highway robbery. Without the lawyers most probably none of these citizens would have recovered anything at all.
Some of these cases are easy and yes, the lawyer makes out like a bandit, some are hard and the lawyer, even though he wins the case he loses money, and some he loses and the lawyer is out thousands and tens of thousands of dollars.
The cases I think are outrageous are the class action lawsuits where there are 50-100 thousand plaintiffs and they get about 25 cents on the settlement and the lawyers end up with the 100s of millions.
I also thought of Boston and Massachusetts when I first read his story. The immediate action of the local and state governments in MA was to put Boston and the smaller towns/cities that surround it under martial law for several days. Don’t leave home. Don’t drive on the streets. Everyone subject to search. And most residents batted not an eye.
In MA it is illegal to own or possess a firearm or ammunition without the state’s specific to you permission. One cannot even buy ammunition there without a FOID (Firearms Owners Identification card).
