IT shouldnt be a big deal that I gave blood this week, but it is. To do it, I had to give up all forms of sex for a year. The reason: Im gay.
With what we know today about the disease, its a stupid reason.
In 1985, in the early days of the AIDS crisis, the United States Food and Drug Administration recommended that men who had sex with other men be prohibited from donating blood indefinitely. This policy made sense at the time. In the decades since, the nation has made enormous progress against the virus. What was once a death sentence is now a treatable, chronic condition. And we can now detect what had been an elusive virus within seven to 28 days of infection, using nucleic acid testing.
In 2015, the agency modified the lifetime ban and allowed men who had sex with men to donate blood if they had abstained from sex for one year. This revision followed several years of study after an advisory committee found the lifetime ban suboptimal.
But this one-year blanket policy, which depends on the honesty of the would-be donor, still falls short by failing to consider a potential donors individual risk factors, an approach some other countries follow with success. As a result, this prohibition, which the American Public Health Association said is not based in science but appears to be modeled after other countries choices and fears, effectively forbids as many as two million potential donors to give blood, according to an analysis published in 2014 by the Williams Institute at the U.C.L.A. School of Law.
This past summer, the F.D.A. began the process of reconsidering its one-year policy.

Big deal marriage or prison it’s the same thing.
How ‘gay’ can you be if you give up being a sperm donor?
EXACTLY!!!
But there IS hope!!!
1 Corinthians 6:9-11
9. Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived:
Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders
10. nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
11. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
If you could NOT change, you would be in most pitiful shape...
He must not have been “gay enough”.
I don’t think he did either. There are quite a few out there that told homosexuals to lie about it to be able to donate blood. Only those that are truly evil would inflict this death sentence upon the innocent.
Yeah, I’m sure he didn’t have sex for a year.
The new recommendations came out less than a year ago, so he didn’t have time. What a liar.
More accurately, men who have sex with men shouldn't be allowed to donate blood. It's BEHAVIOR that is risky, not the propensity. There are celibate men who have same-sex attraction who have never gone down that road.
So does the child Ryan White.
Agreed. Plus the lobsters in the tanks
At the grocery store love us. They are our friends.
When is lobster pride
Week.
I lived in Spain for 3 years in the early 1980s. My son was born there and thus is also disqualified from donating.
Good thing we’ve got millions of people in this country, otherwise we might have a donor shortage.
When you get out of prison, you are not expected to continue to pay the equivalent of spousal support forever. :->
They should not be donating blood.
I am not allowed to donate blood because I lived in France for 3 months in the eighties, for school. They’re worried about mad cow disease.
By now I think the symptoms should have shown up. But still... I don’t want to endanger anybody.
What is wrong with these people.?
The lobsters may be our friends, but we are not his. I can’t Kapitalize on that enough.
You are absolutely right. We should err on the side of caution.
First, how can you trust a person’s word?
Second, doesn’t HIV hide in the body for a long time?. I’m not sure.
As I said, have not given blood since I learned that I may have some tiny risk of mad cow disease because I went to school in France in the 1980s.
LOL!!!!
No kidding!
Tired and can’t come up with a funny rejoinder.? ;)
I understand! I am a type O. Would love to give blood.
But I studied in Europe and they are worried about mad cow disease.
I also abstained from sex all year, but it was not my choice

LOL! Literally. :)
Btw, I’m in the same boat....:(
Superbacteria will have massive consequences. My father overused antibiotics. He got prescriptions when they were not needed. He did not finish them.
He was a lawyer and had doctor friends who gave him what he wanted period even when it was just a cold.
He ended up dying of pneumonia and he had MRSA.
I visited him several times this spring, in Chicago, right before he died in April.
I kept washing my hands all the time.
I wish he could have seen the Cubs win the World Series, though. He loved every sports team in Chicago.
Me too!
Please see my previous post. I went to school in France.
